The psychology of the child by Jean Piaget( Book )

40 editions published between 1969 and 2000 in English and held by 2,725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this volume we have tried to present, as briefly and as clearly as possible, a synthesis, or summing up, of our work in child psychology. A book such as this seemed to us particularly desirable since our published studies have been spread out over a number of volumes, some of them quite lengthy and some of them fairly difficult to read. This little book, of course, is not meant to be a substitute for reading the other volumes. But it represents, we believe, a useful introduction to the questions we have studied and will enable the reader to gain an adequate understanding of what we have learned in our investigation."--Jean Piaget (March 1969)
Memory and intelligence by Jean Piaget( Book )

58 editions published between 1968 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 1,794 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In short, the reader will be presented not only with a number of experimental facts but also with several theoretical notions, the validity of which the future alone can decide. For the rest, there is one aspect of these studies that has greatly encouraged us in our work: the surprising discovery, in a sphere apparently remote from that of cognitive operations, of a precise succession of operational stages, whose existence we ourselves might have begun to doubt had we listened to all those who do not, or rather do not yet, believe in the validity of the operational approach
The child's conception of space by Jean Piaget( Book )

55 editions published between 1956 and 2000 in English and held by 1,762 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The nature of space, whether an innate idea, the outcome of experience in the external world, or an operational construction has long been a source of philosophical and speculative psychological discussion. This book deals with the development of the child's notions about space
The growth of logical thinking from childhood to adolescence : an essay on the construction of formal operational structures by Bärbel Inhelder( Book )

73 editions published between 1958 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book has two aims: to set forth a description of changes in logical operations between childhood and adolescence and to describe the formal structures that mark the completion of the operational development of intelligence. To tie these together the authors have tried to present the material in a way that would stress the close relationship between the two. Each of the first fifteen chapters (Parts I and II) includes an experimental part by the first author and a brief final analysis by the second author. This analysis aims to isolate the formal or propositional structures found in each case. Chapters 16 and 17 (beginning of Part III) are the work of the second author, whereas Chapter 18 is a joint production. In addition, the specific problems of experimental induction analyzed from a functional standpoint (as distinguished from the present structural analysis) will be the subject of a special work by the first author. The early growth of logic in the child, classification and seriation by Bärbel Inhelder( Book )

39 editions published between 1964 and 2013 in English and held by 1,247 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We should perhaps apologize for inflicting another volume on the patient reader. And yet, in a sense, this work is long overdue. Elsewhere, in our discussions on the development of children's thinking in relation to problems of number, quantity and space, and again in dealing with the notion of chance and inductive reasoning, we have spoken of the formation of elementary logical operations. But the development of these structures as such deserves a separate study, and, from a logical point of view, we should have started with it
The origin of the idea of chance in children by Jean Piaget( Book )

17 editions published between 1975 and 2014 in English and held by 1,155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although originally published in France in 1951 this English translation was not published until 1975. The book supplements the authors' previous publications on the development of thought in the child and is the result of two preoccupations: how thought that is in the process of formation acts to assimilate those aspects of experience that cannot be assimilated deductively - for example, the randomly mixed; and the necessity of discovering how the mental processes work in the totality of spontaneous and experimental searchings that make up what is called the problem of 'induction'. Inducti
Learning and the development of cognition by Bärbel Inhelder( Book )

32 editions published between 1974 and 2015 in English and held by 827 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How do children learn and how are new modes of thought developed? These questions have for years been of paramount interest to psychologists and others concerned with the cognitive development of the child. In this major work, originally published in 1974 and reporting on over ten years' research of the Geneva School, the authors carried the pioneering investigations of Jean Piaget to a new and remarkable level. As Piaget said in his foreword to the book: 'The novelty of the findings, the clarity of the theoretical interpretation, and the sometimes even excessive caution of the concl
The diagnosis of reasoning in the mentally retarded by Bärbel Inhelder( Book )

53 editions published between 1943 and 1974 in 3 languages and held by 664 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The application of Piaget's theory of cognitive development to the assessment of mental ability of the mentally retarded is presented. Following a discussion of developmental theories and diagnosis of mental development, testing interviews demonstrate the limits of cognitive thought at each of three stages. Abnormal intellectual oscillations are described in terms of progressive reasoning, the true oscillations, retrogressive reasoning, and abnormal decalages. Conclusions are discussed for the following: the genetic diagnosis of reasoning, clinical indices of mental deficiency, and deficiencies in reasoning and the theory of development. Appendixes give descriptive data on the 159 subjects and practical directions for testing in the clinical method. An 88-item bibliography is included. (Le)
