The Greeks and the irrational by E. R Dodds( Book )
169 editions published between 1951 and 2012 in 9 languages and held by 3,128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In this philosophy classic, which was first published in 1951, E.R. Dodds takes on the traditional view of Greek culture as a triumph of rationalism. Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" Praised by reviewers as "an event in modern Greek scholarship" and "a book which it would be difficult to over-praise," The Greeks and the Irrational was Volume 25 of the Sather Classical Lectures series."--GoogleBooks
Pagan and Christian in an age of anxiety : some aspects of religious experience from Marcus Aurelius to Constantine by E. R Dodds( Book )
90 editions published between 1965 and 2010 in 6 languages and held by 1,673 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Examines the philosophical and spiritual climate of the Roman Empire during the period between the accession of Marcus Aurelius and the conversion of Constantine. During this period, material decline was steepest and the ferment of new religious feelings most intense. It was an "age of anxiety" in both its material and its moral insecurity. The pax Romana was coming to an end and being succeeded by invasions, epidemics, and civil disorder. Dodds discusses general attitudes to the world and the human condition in the early Christian centuries, and goes on to analyze specific types of daemonic and religious experiences. He also considers both pagan views of Christianity and Christian views of paganism as they emerge in the literature of the time.--From publisher description
The Bacchae by Euripides( Book )
76 editions published between 1944 and 1989 in 5 languages and held by 980 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Classical Greek drama is brought vividly to life in this series of new translations. The new versions remain faithful to the original Greek, yet the language has all the immediacy of contemporary English. The result is a series of genuinely actable plays, which bring students as close as possible to the playwrights' original words and intentions." "Students are encouraged to engage with the text through detailed commentaries, which include suggestions for discussion and analysis. In addition, numerous practical questions stimulate ideas on staging and encourage students to explore the play's dramatic qualities." "Cambridge Translations from Greek Drama is suitable for students of both Classical Civilization and Drama. Useful features include: full synopsis of the play; commentary alongside translation for easy reference; time line to set the play in its historical context; guide to pronunciation of names; and index of topics and themes."--Jacket

Gorgias by Plato( Book )
66 editions published between 1959 and 2002 in 5 languages and held by 840 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Though Gorgias was a Sicilian teacher of oratory, the dialogue is more concerned with ethics than with the art of public speaking. The ability, professed particularly by the Sophists, to make the worse cause appear the better, struck Plato as the source of all corruption. The dialogue's chief interest lies, not in Gorgias' courteous outline of his art, but in the clash between Socrates, the true philosopher, and Callicles, a young Athenian of the stamp of Alcibiades, who brashly maintains that might is right
