The Greeks and the irrational by E. R Dodds( Book )

196 editions published between 1951 and 2014 in 11 languages and held by 2,685 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this philosophy classic, which was first published in 1951, E.R. Dodds takes on the traditional view of Greek culture as a triumph of rationalism. Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" Praised by reviewers as "an event in modern Greek scholarship" and "a book which it would be difficult to over-praise," The Greeks and the Irrational was Volume 25 of the Sather Classical Lectures series."--GoogleBooks
Pagan and Christian in an age of anxiety : some aspects of religious experience from Marcus Aurelius to Constantine by E. R Dodds( Book )

121 editions published between 1965 and 2014 in 10 languages and held by 1,708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Examines the philosophical and spiritual climate of the Roman Empire during the period between the accession of Marcus Aurelius and the conversion of Constantine. During this period, material decline was steepest and the ferment of new religious feelings most intense. It was an "age of anxiety" in both its material and its moral insecurity. The pax Romana was coming to an end and being succeeded by invasions, epidemics, and civil disorder. Dodds discusses general attitudes to the world and the human condition in the early Christian centuries, and goes on to analyze specific types of daemonic and religious experiences. He also considers both pagan views of Christianity and Christian views of paganism as they emerge in the literature of the time.--From publisher description
The ancient concept of progress and other essays on Greek literature and belief by E. R Dodds( Book )

49 editions published between 1973 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 1,014 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Collected poems by Louis MacNeice( Book )

26 editions published between 1949 and 1987 in English and held by 887 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Louis MacNeice (1907-1963) is rightly regarded as one of the foremost Irish poets of this century, but he was also a distinctive, gifted, and popular playwright. This unique selection of eight of MacNeice's best plays, most of which were written for BBC Radio, draws on the most authoritative texts to provide a much-needed reminder of the power of his dramatic writing." "The volume comprises MacNeice's famous The Dark Tower, published here for the first time in its third and final version; the saga play They Met on Good Friday and the parable The Mad Islands, both of which use explicitly Irish subject-matter; the stage play One for the Grave, which mercilessly satirizes television and commercialism; the epic Christopher Columbus; He Had a Date (in its second version), an experiment in radio biography; Prisoner's Progress, a prize-winning parable about an escape from a prisoner-of-war camp; and MacNeice's last play, Persons from Porlock, which traces the nemesis of an artist and was broadcast just four days before MacNeice's own death." "This generous and representative selection makes available again MacNeice's entertaining and innovative blend of fantasy and realism, prose and verse, and offers important new perspectives on MacNeice's poetry."--Jacket
Stoicheiōsis theologikē = The elements of theology by Proclus( Book )

122 editions published between 1933 and 2004 in 4 languages and held by 874 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A concise summa of the Neoplatonic system in its fully developed form; for the student of late Greek thought it is second in importance only to the Enneads of Plotinus. Professor Dodds has provided a critical text based on a personal examination of some 40 manuscripts, together with an English translation and a philosophical and linguistic commentary. [Book jacket]
Gorgias by Plato( Book )

81 editions published between 1959 and 2002 in 5 languages and held by 867 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Though Gorgias was a Sicilian teacher of oratory, the dialogue is more concerned with ethics than with the art of public speaking. The ability, professed particularly by the Sophists, to make the worse cause appear the better, struck Plato as the source of all corruption. The dialogue's chief interest lies, not in Gorgias' courteous outline of his art, but in the clash between Socrates, the true philosopher, and Callicles, a young Athenian of the stamp of Alcibiades, who brashly maintains that might is right
