Morris W Hirsch(
Book
)
29 editions published between 1974 and 2000 in English and held by 1,097 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is about dynamical aspects of ordinary differential equations and the relations between dynamical systems and certain fields outside pure mathematics. A prominent role is played by the structure theory of linear operators on finitedimensional vector spaces; the authors have included a selfcontained treatment of that subject

Differential topology by
Morris W Hirsch(
Book
)
35 editions published between 1976 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 744 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book gives the reader a thorough knowledge of the basic topological ideas necessary for studying differential manifolds. These topics include immersions and imbeddings, approach techniques, and the Morse classification of surfaces and their cobordism. The author keeps the mathematical prerequisites to a minimum; this and the emphasis on the geometric and intuitive aspects of the subject make the book an excellent and useful introduction for the student. There are numerous excercises on many different levels ranging from practical applications of the theorems to significant further development of the theory and including some open research problems

Smoothings of piecewise linear manifolds by
Morris W Hirsch(
Book
)
15 editions published between 1974 and 2016 in English and held by 471 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The intention of the authors is to examine the relationship between piecewise linear structure and differential structure: a relationship, they assert, that can be understood as a homotopy obstruction theory, and, hence, can be studied by using the traditional techniques of algebraic topology. Thus the book attacks the problem of existence and classification (up to isotopy) of differential structures compatible with a given combinatorial structure on a manifold. The problem is completely "solved" in the sense that it is reduced to standard problems of algebraic topology. The first part of the book is purely geometrical; it proves that every smoothing of the product of a manifold M and an interval is derived from an essentially unique smoothing of M. In the second part this result is used to translate the classification of smoothings into the problem of putting a linear structure on the tangent microbundle of M. This in turn is converted to the homotopy problem of classifying maps from M into a certain space PL/O. The set of equivalence classes of smoothings on M is given a natural abelian group structure

From topology to computation : proceedings of the Smalefest by
Morris W Hirsch(
Book
)
17 editions published between 1990 and 1993 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume is a Festschrift for Stephen Smale's 60th birthday; most of the chapters are based on papers given at a symposium in his honor at the University of California at Berkeley. The contributions reflect the breadth of Smale's interests, ranging over a wide variety of fields in pure and applied mathematics. In addition, Smale has provided an autobiographical essay, as well as a record of the lively panel discussions at the symposium. The research contributions include papers on differential topology, mathematical economics, dynamical systems, on the theory of computation, on nonlinear functional analysis, and on various applications in the physical and biological sciences. All are currently active areas of interdisciplinary research

Applications of automata theory and algebra : via the mathematical theory of complexity to biology, physics, psychology, philosophy,
and games by
John L Rhodes(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book was originally written in 1969 by Berkeley mathematician John Rhodes. It is the founding work in what is now called algebraic engineering, an emerging field created by using the unifying scheme of finite state machine models and their complexity to tie together many fields: finite group theory, semigroup theory, automata and sequential machine theory, finite phase space physics, metabolic and evolutionary biology, epistemology, mathematical theory of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and game theory. The author thus introduced a completely original algebraic approach to complexity and the understanding of finite systems. The unpublished manuscript, often referred to as "The Wild Book", became an underground classic, continually requested in manuscript form, and read by many leading researchers in mathematics, complex systems, artificial intelligence, and systems biology. Yet it has never been available in print until now. This first published edition has been edited and updated by Chrystopher Nehaniv for the 21st century. Its novel and rigorous development of the mathematical theory of complexity via algebraic automata theory reveals deep and unexpected connections between algebra (semigroups) and areas of science and engineering. Cofounded by John Rhodes and Kenneth Krohn in 1962, algebraic automata theory has grown into a vibrant area of research, including the complexity of automata, and semigroups and machines from an algebraic viewpoint, and which also touches on infinite groups, and other areas of algebra. This book sets the stage for the application of algebraic automata theory to areas outside mathematics
