The decipherment of linear B by John Chadwick( Book )

204 editions published between 1958 and 2014 in 11 languages and held by 2,534 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The languages of the ancient world and the mysterious scripts, long undeciphered, in which they were encoded have represented one of the most intriguing problems of classical archaeology in modern times. This celebrated account of the decipherment of Linear B in the 1950s by Michael Ventris was written by his close collaborator in the momentous discovery. In revealing the secrets of Linear B it offers a valuable survey of late Minoan and Myceanean archaeology, uncovering fascinating details of the religion and economic history of an ancient civilisation
The Mycenaean world by John Chadwick( Book )

70 editions published between 1976 and 2005 in 9 languages and held by 1,923 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1952 the decipherment of the Linear B script suddenly revealed the Greekness of Mycenaean Greece. Now, after new discoveries and more than 20 years of intensive work, scholars are able to interpret the written documents and reconstruct from them a vivid picture of life in this remote period, in a way which is impossible from archaeology alone. John Chadwick, who assisted Ventris in the original decipherment, has played a major part in these advances. He now summarizes the results of recent research and in so doing opens the door to a new world, Mycenaean Greece seen through the eyes of its inhabitants. The tablets may be only, as he describes them, 'the account books of anonymous clerks', but from these prosaic documents he shows how we can infer a bronze industry, foreign slave-women, or even human sacrifice. Not least important is the comparison of the newly available data with the Homeric account, much to the detriment of Homer's credibility as a witness
Documents in Mycenaean Greek by Michael Ventris( Book )

75 editions published between 1856 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 1,412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work demonstrates that the previously mysterious script Linear B is, in fact, a syllabic form of written Greek, a finding that was to revolutionise ancient history and linguistics, when it was originally published in 1953. This second edition, originally published in 1973, also examines how the study of the subject had expanded as a result of that finding and includes some of the material discovered since the initial publication

Explains what is known about the ancient writing systems used by Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece
Hippocratic writings by Hippocrates( Book )

20 editions published between 1978 and 2005 in English and held by 576 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If the work of Hippocrates be taken as representing the foundation upon which the edifice of historical Greek medicine was reared, then the work of GALEN, who lived some six hundred years later, may be looked upon as the summit of the same edifice. He was born in Pergamum A.D. 129, and both there and in other academic centres of the Aegean pursued his medical studies before being appointed physicial to the Pergamene gladiators in 157. Becoming dissatisfied with this type of practice he emigrated to Rome, where he soon won acknowledgement as the foremost medical authority of his time and where, with one brief interruption, he remained until his death in 199

Lexicographica graeca : contributions to the lexicography of ancient Greek by John Chadwick( Book )

14 editions published between 1996 and 2003 in English and held by 325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

G. Liddell and R. Scott's Greek-English Lexicon (revised and augmented by H.S. Jones in 1940) has been the essential tool of advanced Greek scholars for 150 years; in order to update it a new Supplement has been published (1996), replacing that of 1968. In this provocative reconsideration both of its lexicographical principles and of individual articles, John Chadwick examines the need for further revision and expansion of the volume through a reexamination of the classical Greek vocabulary. A series of notes are presented, making important and stimulating contributions to the study of classical Greek lexicography, and offering many new interpretations of passages from familiar authors based upon a lexicographic approach. Essential reading for all scholars of classical creek

A lexicon to the Latin text of the theological writings of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) by John Chadwick( Book )

16 editions published between 1975 and 2008 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The true Christian religion, containing the universal theology of the New Church, foretold by the Lord in Daniel VII. 13, 14; and in Revelation XXI. 1, 2 by Emanuel Swedenborg( Book )

8 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Swedenborg's last published work during his lifetime, this book contains a summary of the extensive teachings Swedenborg received throughout his period of visions. Swedenborg considered his theology to be the original teachings of Christ, which had become obfuscated through centuries of misinterpretation. According to him, what he offered was neither a "theology" nor a "philosophy," but rather a direct spiritual revelation from God. Swedenborg's "true Christian religion" is based on chaste and loving marriage, a rejection of the doctrine of the Trinity, and a belief that both faith and works are necessary to receive salvation. Swedenborg also believed that the Last Judgment had already occurred, though it was only visible in the spirit world
