Inquiries concerning the intellectual powers, and the investigation of truth by John Abercrombie( Book )

66 editions published between 1833 and 2014 in English and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The text of the following work, strictly speaking, is Dr. Abercrombie's treatise on the Human Mind, entire. In connexion with this treatise, however, the original edition has two articles attached to it by the author, for the sole benefit of the class whom he was addressing, viz. a class of medical students. The first to which we refer, is a history of the Science of Intellectual Philosophy, prefixed to the work; the second, an admirable set of directions, to guide medical students in their professional inquiries. These treatises do not of necessity constitute a part of a treatise on the Philosophy of Mind. They are accordingly omitted in this edition. What, in the editor's opinion, constitutes the treatise itself, is published entire, without alterations or omissions, the editor holding his author's language sacred. The additions which have been made, are intended, not to supply any supposed deficiencies in the original, but simply to adapt it to a purpose for which the book is, in the main, admirably suited: they are intended as nearly as was possible, to be such additional explanations as the editor conceived the author would himself have made, had he have had in view, whilst preparing the book, the purpose to which it is now applied."

History of William the Conqueror by Jacob Abbott( Book )

Overview: A fascinating account of a powerful ruler. Jacob Abbott was one of the most prolific American writers of history in the nineteenth century, writing many biographies on the world's most influential leaders in a clear and exciting style. This comprehensive volume, first published in 1849 and part of Abbott's Illustrated Histories series, details the remarkable and fascinating life of William the Conqueror, the first Norman King of England. The king's life is researched and recorded thoroughly, chronicling the years from his illegitimate birth to his calamitous burial. Born in Normandy and promised the throne of England by King Edward, William decided to invade the country after another contender for the crown took the throne. Abbott recounts the famous Battle of Hastings in great detail, and with an enthralling narrative captures the young conqueror's struggles, ambition, and aspirations during his time in power. William the Conqueror's reign in England significantly transformed the country, whose residents resented being ruled by a foreigner who relied entirely upon his army to keep the country in subjugation and who suppressed their many revolts

History of Cyrus the Great by Jacob Abbott( Book )

49 editions published between 1850 and 2014 in English and held by 289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, dating from 1850, covers Cyrus the Great (d. 530 BC), founder of the Persian Empire, from his early years and ascension to the throne to the Oracles, the conquests of Lydia and Babylon, the restoration of the Jews, and more. Cyrus was the founder of the ancient Persian empire -- a monarchy, perhaps the most wealthy and magnificent which the world has ever seen. Of that strange and incomprehensible principle of human nature, under the influence of which vast masses of men, notwithstanding the universal instinct of aversion to control, combine, under certain circumstances, by millions and millions, to maintain, for many successive centuries, the representatives of some one great family in a condition of exalted, and absolute, and utterly irresponsible ascendency over themselves, while they toil for them, watch over them, submit to endless and most humiliating privations in their behalf, and commit, if commanded to do so, the most inexcusable and atrocious crimes to sustain the demigods they have thus made in their lofty estate, we have, in the case of this Persian monarchy, one of the most extraordinary exhibitions. - Publisher

"The Rollo books: A lively collection of stories about Rollo and his every day adventures in growin up in 19th century rural America, that have delighted generations of children ... The scenes are laid in quiet and virtuous life, and the character and conduct described are generally--with the exception of some of the ordinary exhibitions of childish folly--character and conduct to be imitated, for it is generally better, in dealing with children, to allure them to what is right by agreeable pictures of it, than to attempt to drive them to it by repulsive delineations of what is wrong."--Cover
