Dante's Divine comedy by Seymour Chwast ( Book )
4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 695 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this Seymour Chwast's version of Dante Alighieri's epic poem, Dante and his guide Virgil don fedoras and wander through noirish realms of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Along the way they catalog a multitude of sinners and saints--many of them real people to whom Dante tellingly assigned either horrible punishment or indescribable pleasure--and meet both God and Lucifer face-to-face. Chwast creates a visual fantasia that fascinates on every page. His inventive illustrations capture the delirious complexity of this classic of the western canon

Japanese modern : graphic design between the wars by James H Fraser ( Book )
6 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
With enticing visuals and a fascinating text, Japanese Modern: Graphic Design between the Wars is the first book to examine an often ignored period of Japanese graphic design. From the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, Japan was a burgeoning industrial state with a growing consumer culture that relied increasingly on commercial art to promote and sell its products. While adhering to its own distinctive artistic traditions, Japanese graphic design was nevertheless heavily influenced by Western styles, trends, and fashions - the most influential being art moderne, or art deco. Japanese graphic designers and art directors drew inspiration from Europe's master poster artists and typographers - particularly those in France and Germany. They also imported and assimilated elements of Bauhaus, constructivism, and futurism, and applied them to a variety of media, including posters, packages, brochures, advertisements, and magazines. Art moderne is perhaps best illustrated in the scores of department store posters produced during this time, while hybrids are seen in the ubiquitous collections of period matchbox labels. Tracing the introduction of this Western-influenced style through its most compelling movements and leading practitioners, this strikingly illustrated book presents a scintillating look at modern Japanese graphic design
Illustration : a visual history by Steven Heller ( Book )
9 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Illustration: A Visual History is a survey of the art form by the foremost historian of graphic design and a celebrated designer/illustrator, joins the authors' companion volume Graphic Style as an indispensable resource for anyone interested in art, design, and popular culture. Heller and Chwast's rich chronicle of well over a century of illustration covers the so-called Golden Age to the current Bronze Age and celebrates illustration - long deemed a second cousin to fine art - as a significant popular art that is often more visible, recognizable, and memorable than "higher arts."" "Covering illustration from the Industrial Revolution, which made printing possible for mass consumption, to the digital age, which has transformed publishing into a desktop affair, Heller and Chwast's approach uses two complementary ways of presenting the story of the field: style and form. Through this unique perspective, Victorian, Art Deco, Postmodern, Punk, and Digital styles, as well as political, satiric, absurdist, and erotic forms, are deftly illuminated in order to reveal visual mannerisms, quirks, and tics that define representative drawn, painted, and digitized objects. Key individuals who helped to alter these styles through their distinct personas are examined and placed in historical context."--BOOK JACKET

"Part design and illustration studio, part pop-culture think tank, Push Pin Studios had phenomenal sway over visual culture from the mid 1950s through the 1980s. Its legendary founding principals, Seymour Chwast and Milton Glaser, created a graphic design laboratory that mined the traditions of the past to presage the eclecticism of the future, and took design in a bold, new direction. Pushing the limits of visual tradition, the studio developed a visual code for its time and altered the course of graphic style and design practice for subsequent generations." "Pus Pin's place in design history is nowhere better revealed than in its signature periodical The Push Pin Graphic - a stylish, brash, free-form showcase for the studio's talents and personal interests. For The Push Pin Graphic: A Quarter Century of Innovative Design and Illustration, Chwast and Glaser join design historian Steven Heller and designer Martin Venezky to cull the best of the studio's quirky, celebrated periodical. Featuring the covers and select spreads from each of the eighty-six issues of the publication, The Push Pin Graphic is the first comprehensive account of this design milestone - a unique glimpse into the creative output of a firm that continues to inspire designers to this day."--BOOK JACKET

The Canterbury tales by Seymour Chwast ( Book )
4 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 427 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Accompany a band of merry medieval pilgrims as they make their way-on motorcycles, of course-to Canterbury. Meeting at the Tabard Inn, the travelers, including a battle-worn knight, a sweetly pretentious prioress, the bawdy Wife of Bath, and an emaciated scholar-clerk, come up with a plan to pass time on the journey to Thomas à Becket's shrine by telling stories. The twenty-four tales, which range from high romance set in ancient Greece to low comedy in contemporary England, are adapted into graphic novel form by Seymour Chwast-a pitch-perfect transposition of Chaucer's pointed satire. Chwast's illustrations relate tales of trust and treachery, of piety and bawdiness, in an engaging style that will appeal to those who have enjoyed The Canterbury Tales for years, and those for whom this is a first, delectable introduction"--Provided by publisher
