Sie ist eine der ersten europäischen Städtetopographien der Frühen Neuzeit: die Edition Braun-Hogenberg. In sechs monumentalen Bänden stellten Georg Braun und Franz Hogenberg zwischen 1572 und 1640 eine Übersicht von fast 600 Städten von Mexiko bis nach Indien zusammen. Aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln erfassten Künstler die Stadtanlagen mit ihren markanten Bauwerken, Straßenzügen und landschaftlichen Besonderheiten. Die Vorlagen schickten sie dem Radierer und Kupferstecher Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590), der sie als Buchillustration umsetzte. Der Theologe Georg Braun (1541-1622) schuf das Gesamtkonzept und versah die Darstellungen mit Texten. Spannend und aufschlussreich ist in der Edition Braun-Hogenberg nachzulesen, was damals über einzelne Städte bekannt war. Die Texte beinhalten kurze Beschreibungen, nennen Alter, Bedeutung oder die Gründungsgeschichte, zählen markante Bauwerke oder berühmte Persönlichkeiten auf und geben vereinzelt auch Legenden wieder- eine Zusammenstellung von allem, was man für erwähnenswert hielt.
