The introduction (pp. 9-20) relates that Jakob Edelstein, the head of the Judenrat in Theresienstadt, saw to it that the children in the ghetto had better conditions and therefore a better chance for survival. The children suffered from illnesses due to lack of nutrition and crowding, but their mortality rate was relatively low. However, from summer 1942 children were included in the transports to extermination camps. Ca. 7,500 children from the Protectorate were deported; only 242 survived. Between 29 October 1943-22 September 1944 the children of block Q609 (from the Protectorate) put out a periodical, in Czech, called "Kamarád". The editor was Ivan Pollak (b. 1929); he was deported to Birkenau in October 1944 and died in Kaufering in January 1945. Pp. 23-153 contain a translation of all 22 issues of the journal, describing, among other topics, the life of the children in the ghetto. Pp. 49-63 and 154-175 present a facsimile of one of the issues and a comics series drawn by Pollak
