Iracema a novel by José Martiniano de Alencar ( )
115 editions published between 1865 and 2011 in 6 languages and held by 1,439 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Martim, " a young warrior whose white skin is not colored by the blood of the Americas," is lost in the forest when he happens upon the beautiful maiden Iracema. She leads him to the Tabajara village and her father, the tribe's shaman. Martim is taken in by the spiritual leader, and Iracema attends to him. Soon, however, her undisguised interest in Martim arouses the jealousy and enmity of "the great chieftain of the Tabajara nation," the hotheaded, treacherous Irapua. One night as the chieftain and his warriors sleep, Iracema leads her love out of the village to a reunion with his spiritual brother, Poti, and the safety of his adopted tribe. Their elopement enrages the Tabajaras and makes Iracema an outcast, but together they undertake an odyssey that will determine the future of a new-born nation." "This tale, which contributed to a Brazilian sense of nationhood, and which many contemporary Brazilian writers and literary critics still cite as a foundation for their own work, reflects the gingerly way that mid-nineteenth century Brazil dealt with race mixture and multicultural experience. With this new translation, readers gain entrance to one of the most beautiful and affecting stories of Brazilian literature, and witness an important chapter in the development of a country's national literature."--BOOK JACKET

Senhora : profile of a woman by José Martiniano de Alencar ( Book )
4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"It is a truth universally acknowledged ..." that a single woman in possession of a good character but no fortune must be in want of a wealthy husband - that is, if she is the heroine of a nineteenth-century novel. Senhora, by contrast, turns the tables on this familiar plot. Its strong-willed, independent heroine Aurelia uses newly inherited wealth to "buy back" and exact revenge on the fiance who had left her for a woman with a more enticing dowry. This exciting Brazilian novel, originally published in 1875 and here translated into English for the first time, raises intriguing questions about traditional gender relationships, the commercial nature of marriage, and the institution of the dowry. While true love and conventional marital roles triumph in the end, the novel still offers realistic insights into the social and economic structure of Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1800s. With its unexpected plot, it also opens new important perspectives on the nineteenth-century Romantic novel. -- Back cover
