Il s'agit de l'expédition commandée par le capitaine de vaisseau Nicolas Baudin, mort en septembre 1803 à l'île de France lors du voyage de retour. François Péron participa en tant que zoologiste à ce voyage. L'inscription autour de la très belle vignette sur la p. de t. de l'atlas ("La nouvelle-Hollande mieux connue - végétaux utiles naturalisés en France"), suggère que les résultats de ce voyage se situent surtout dans les domaines de la géographie et de la botanique. C'est parfaitement juste pour la géographie, tandis que la botanique est totalement absente dans cette publication. En fait, la deuxième partie de cette inscription fait allusion à un voyage précédent de Baudin aux Antilles et en Amérique du Sud d'où il avait ramené plus de deux cents caisses de plantes et arbrisseaux vivants. Grâce à Péron, le voyage aux terres australes avait par contre permis d'établir une énorme collection zoologique: d'après Cuvier, rapporteur de l'Institut de France, les collections ramenés comptent "plus de cent mille échantillons d'animaux ... et le nombre des expèces nouvelles ... s'éléve à plus de deux mille cinq cents."
