Histoires naturelles by Jules Renard ( Book )

A delightful variation on the long tradition of bestiary writing, Jules Renard's short verse and prose poems have captured the imagination of readers and artists since they were originally written in 1894, with Ravel famously setting five of them to music. Presented in a new version by acclaimed translator Richard Stokes and enriched by Lucinda Rogers's beautiful pen drawings, this sumptuously produced volume will captivate and enchant new generations of readers the world over. --Oneworld Books

4 editions published between 1964 and 2012 in English and held by 574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Spanning from 1887 to a month before his death in 1910, The Journal of Jules Renard is a unique autobiographical masterpiece that, though celebrated abroad and cited as a principle influence by writers as varying as Somerset Maugham and Donald Barthelme, remains largely undiscovered in the United States. Throughout his journal, Renard develops not only his artistic convictions but also his humanity, as he reflects on the nineteenth-century French literary and art scene and the emergence of his position as an important novelist and playwright in that world, provides aphorisms and quips, and por

Après avoir obtenu quelques faveurs de Madame, toute en vapeurs et petites attentions, il donnera à la nièce des leçons de natation d'un genre plutôt spécial... Songs of Ravel & Satie by Régine Crespin ( Recording )
1 edition published in 1998 in French and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The now-retired Rǧine Crespin is easily the greatest soprano voice to come out of France since World War II, notable not just for its body and luster but for such an effortless sense of line that you're never aware of the individual notes, only the overall musical idea they're meant to create. This was recorded a bit late in her career and some wobble is apparent. But her characterization of the words--so important in Ravel's precise animal portraits in Histoires Naturelles --is peerless. Too bad that the Satie songs--in terms of quality--veer between serious endeavors and cabaret toss-offs. The disc is filled out by Crespin's performance of Beethoven's concert aria Ah! Perfido , which illustrates why she was a formidable Tosca in her day. --David Patrick Stearns

"Renard mingles wonder and humor in a series of miniature portraits of subjects drawn from the natural world: dogs, cats, pigs, roses, snails, trees and birds of all sorts, humans of course, and even a humble potato. Ranging from a sentence to several pages, Renard's sketches are ... compress[ed] and descripti[ve], capturing both appearance and behavior through a choice of details that makes the familiar unfamiliar and yet surprisingly true to life."--Publisher description

""Ces jours-ci, je sens un roman. De quel espèce serait le vôtre ? (...)
