The stranger a drama in five acts
by August von Kotzebue
(
Book
)
368 editions published between 1790 and 2005 in 11 languages and held by 376 libraries worldwide Three handwritten role books (actors' scripts) for the parts of Major von der Horst; ein Unbekannter; and ein Greis. (The play has about eight other characters.) The role book for Major von der Horst is stamped in three places: "Naumann & Rosenbaum Theater-Agenten / New York." It shows the subtitle for the play as "Schauspiel in fünf Acten," while the role book for ein Unbekannter shows the subtitle as "Schauspiel in fünf Aufzügen." The role book for ein Greis has what seems to be a prop list noted on the back cover. Names of actors written on the front of the role book for the Major seem to reflect 4 different casts over time. That item presumably dates from a somewhat earlier period than the other 2 role books, each of which bears just one actor's name. Three names considered together (Neumann, Serges, and Hirschburg, respectively) are recognizable from the casts of other German-language plays performed in Philadelphia, and could reflect a performance in the mid 1870s, or possibly later. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
