Statement of the Authors Guild on the continuing trend to concentration of power in the book publishing industry by Authors' Guild (U.S.)( Book )

2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is one of several papers presented at a Federal Trade Commission Symposium on Media Concentration. A statement by the Authors Guild, it examines the merger-takeover trend in book publishing. The Authors Guild feels that the merger trend in book publishing has passed beyond the warning line drawn by the antimerger clause of the Clayton Act, Section 7; threatens competition in the literary market place and the survival of a structure composed of numerous independent publishing companies; threatens the individual author's bargaining power, income, and opportunities to be published; and endangers the uninhibited marketplace of ideas guaranteed by the First Amendment. The supplemental memorandum explores the proposed acquisition of the Book-of-the-Month-Club by the Time, Inc./Little, Brown publishing complex. It also contains a sample of statistical figures for the book club and mass paperback markets from recent statistical reports published by The Association of American Publishers. (Mkm)
Statement of the Authors Guild, Inc. by Irwin Karp( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper is related to a similar statement presented at a Federal Trade Commission Symposium on Media Concentration. It was submitted by the Authors Guild to Senator Edward Kennedy's Subcommittee on Antitrust and Monopoly on May 10, 1978. It is one of several memoranda by the Guild opposing the acquisitions and mergers they feel have given conglomerates and large publishing companies increasing control over major lines of book publishing commerce. This statement discusses the following subjects: the antitrust law's prohibition on undue concentration in any relevant line of commerce within book publishing; conglomeration and concentration in book club/mail order publishing, in mass market paperback publishing, and in trade book publishing; the impact of this concentration on independent trade book publishers and authors and on the security of the First Amendment marketplace of ideas; and the effect of this concentration on the publishing industry's ability to fulfill its social and cultural responsibilities.
