Les largesses de Louis-Philippe (don de 200.000 francs et nomination au comité de législation du Conseil d'Etat) n'enrayèrent pas la ruine morale et financière du député libéral, puisqu'il était engagé dans "la moins digne des oppositions": une "flatterie subtile des passions révolutionnaires et populaires". L'auteur rappelle aussi les échecs de Constant à l'Académie, et ses obsèques : l'"enthousiasme faux", le "cortège froid et sec" furent à l'image de la vie de l'homme.
