Dan Givoli(
Book
)
7 editions published between 2004 and 2011 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume celebrates the eightieth birthday of the famous applied mathematician Joseph B. Keller. The book contains 12 chapters, each on a specific area of mathematical modeling, written by established researchers who have collaborated with J.B. Keller during his long career. These chapters, all inspired by J.B. Keller, deal with a variety of application fields and together span the broad subject of mathematical modeling. The models discussed in the book describe the behavior of various systems such as those related to finance, waves, microorganisms, shocks, DNA, flames, contact, optics, fluids, bubbles and jets. The book also contains a preface written by the Editors, a full list of J.B. Keller's publications, and a comprehensive index. The book is intended for mathematicians, scientists and engineers, as well as graduate students in these fields, who are interested in mathematical models of physical phenomena

Water wave runup on a beach by
Joseph B Keller(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
While investigating the Tsunami wave project, a numerical method was devised to solve the initial boundary value problem for the equations of the nonlinear shallow water theory. The case of one horizontal dimension was considered in a domain bounded by a shore at one end, with the motion of the shoreline taken into account. In addition, this method enabled the incident wave to be introduced at the seaward end of the domain. The water was assumed to be at rest in the domain until the incident wave arrived, and the bottom was assumed to slope uniformly. (Author)

Asymptotic methods for partial differential equations : the reduced wave equation and Maxwell's equation: prepared for Air
Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, Office of Aerospace Research, United States Air Force, Bedford, Mass. by
Ralph Maxwell Lewis(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The asymptotic theory of the reduced wave equation and Maxwell's equations for high frequencies is presented. The theory is applied to representative problems involving reflection, transmission, and diffraction in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media. The report contains few new results. It is intended to unify and summarize the existing literature on the subject

Wave propagation in random media by
Joseph B Keller(
Book

3 editions published in 1960 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Wave propagation and random media are defined, and the nature of the mathematical problems arising in random media is described. The two principal types of methods for solving these problemshonest and dishonest methodsare explained. These methods are first illustrated by considering the geometrical optics of a random medium by one method of each type. Some new results are obtained by an honest method and some errors in a previous work are pointed out. Comparison is made between the results of the two methods and the reasons why they disagree are explained. As the propagation in random media is described. Accurate procedures for approximate Bayesian and conditional inference without the need for orthogonal parameters by
Stanford University(

5 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This paper concerns methods to construct approximate confidence limits for a scalar parameter in the presence of nuisance parameters. The methods are based on Bayesian procedures discussed by Peers (1965) and Stein (1985), in which prior density is chosen so that the posterior quantiles of iP are approximate confidence limits with coverage error of order 0(n1)) under repeated sampling. Multidimensional integration of the posterior density is avoided by using approximations of marginal densities and distribution functions; thus, adjustments are obtained that 4 Drove the standard normal approximation to the distributions of signed roots of the profile and conditional likelihood ratio statistics for psi. The necessary prior densities are easy to specify when the nuisance parameters are orthogonal to the parameter of interest, and this simplicities exploited in developing the methods. However, the need for explicit specification of an orthogonal parameterization is alleviated by approximating the Jacobian of a transformation to orthogonality. The methods are illustrated and compared with other procedures in some examples involving exponential families
