What is mathematical logic? by John N Crossley ( Book )
43 editions published between 1972 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 1,167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This introduction to the main ideas and results of mathematical logic is a serious treatment geared toward non-logicians. Starting with a historical survey of logic in ancient times, it traces the 17th-century development of calculus and discusses modern theories, including set theory, the continuum hypothesis, and other ideas. 1972 edition
Hernando de los Ríos Coronel and the Spanish Philippines in the golden age by John N Crossley ( )
8 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 855 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Whilst much scholarly work has been focused on Spain's American colonies, much less is know about Spanish colonization of the Pacific. As such, this book fills an important gap in our knowledge, directing attention both to Spain's wider imperial ambitions, and the specific situation within the Philippines. By structuring the book around the life of Hernando de los Ríos Coronel, many overlapping and complex threads are drawn out that cast light upon a diverse range of subjects. Soldier, priest, diplomat, explorer, naval pilot and scientist, de los Ríos was a fascinating figure who played a pivotal role in Spanish efforts to establish a thriving colony in the Philippines. In 1588, at the age of 29 he was sent to the Philippines as a soldier, and once there quickly established himself as a pillar of society, ultimately becoming a priest. Over 36 years, until his death sometime before the end of January 1624, he shuttled between the Philippines and Spain, in his role as Procurator General - the sole representative of the Philippines (both Spaniards and Indigenes) at the Spanish Court. As well as telling the story of an extraordinary individual, this book provides a fascinating introduction to the early history of the Spannish Philippines
Growing ideas of number by John N Crossley ( )
4 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 827 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Growing Ideas of Number explores the notion of how ideas of number have grown throughout history. It looks at how different types of number and views of numbers (and their meaning and applications) have varied across cultures over time, and combines historical, archaeological and psychological considerations with the mathematics. The book illustrates some of the real problems and subtleties of number, including counting, calculation, measuring and using machines, which ancient and modern people have grappled with-and continue to grapple with today. It includes a range of illustrative examples

Adapting proofs-as-programs the Curry-Howard protocol by Iman Hafiz Poernomo ( )
16 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 563 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book is intended for graduate students in computer science or mathematics who wish to extend their background in logic and type theory as well as gain experience working with logical frameworks and practical proof systems. In addition, the proofs-as-programs research community, and the wider computational logic, formal methods and software engineering communities will benefit. The applications given in the book should be of interest for researchers working in the target problem domains."--BOOK JACKET

The emergence of number by John N Crossley ( Book )
19 editions published between 1980 and 1987 in English and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents detailed studies of the development of three kinds of number. In the first part the development of the natural numbers from Stone-Age times right up to the present day is examined not only from the point of view of pure history but also taking into account archaeological, anthropological and linguistic evidence. The dramatic change caused by the introduction of logical theories of number in the 19th century is also treated and this part ends with a non-technical account of the very latest developments in the area of Gödel's theorem. The second part is concerned with the deve

Adapting Proofs-as-Programs The Curry-Howard Protocol. Monographs in Computer Science by John N Crossley ( )
2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This monograph details several important advances in the area known as the proofs-as-programs paradigm, which constitutes a set of approaches to developing programs from proofs in constructive logic. It serves the dual purpose of providing a state-of-the-art overview of the field, and detailing tools and techniques to stimulate further research. One of the book's central themes is a general, abstract framework for developing new systems of program synthesis by adapting proofs-as-programs to new contexts, which the authors call the "Curry-Howard Protocol". This protocol is used to provide two novel applications for industrial-scale, complex software engineering: contractual imperative program synthesis and structured software synthesis. These applications constitute an exemplary justification for the applicability of the protocol to different contexts. The book is intended for graduate students in computer science or mathematics who wish to extend their background in logic and type theory as well as gain experience working with logical frameworks and practical proof systems.; In addition, the proofs-as-programs research community, and the wider computational logic, formal methods and software engineering communities will benefit. The applications given in the book should be of interest for researchers working in the target problem domains
