The double headed eagle Hitler's rise to power, 1918-1933( Visual )

6 editions published between 1973 and 2006 in German and English and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Summary: Using material taken from features, documentaries, newsreels and propaganda film, this compilation traces Hitler's rise to power from 1918 to 1933. Concentrating on people rather than events, it shows the power of the German nationalist movement under Hindenburg giving way to that of the National Socialists. Against the pageantry of Nazi rallies, the growing distress of the unemployed finds some alleviation in the fantasy world of the cinema, but elsewhere violent streetfighting breaks out as political opinions polarise. Then, finally, at a parade held after Hitler's appointment as Chancellor, Goebbels harangues the crowd and Nazi students throw the books of banned authors onto bonfires. Throughout the film the emphasis is on atmosphere rather than on details of fact

2 editions published between 1974 and 1999 in English and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This documentary juxtaposes newsreel footage, film clips and period music in an eye-opening look at the Great Depression. Many of the movies created in the 1930s featured strong social commentary, while others offered pure escapism and fed a fascination with a dazzling world out of reach to the everyday American. Through a contrast between the fantasy of film and the reality of everyday life, a fascinating perspective on the Great Depression and Hollywood's golden age is presented. Also includes political speeches by Franklin D. Roosevelt and others
