Though several biographies have been written about "the humanist pope," this book allows Aeneas to tell his story in his own words through a careful selection of seventy-five letters and two documents. All but one newly translated and most translated for the first time into English, these writings bring Aeneas vibrantly alive for the ordinary reader. Aeneas's letters range from brief and very personal revelations to a history the length of a small treatise. They provide a unique lens for exploring the less political, more private aspects of his life. They trace the changes in his political and ecclesiastical allegiances that parallel his change of vocation from worldly humanist poet to learned prelate, and from participant at the Council of Basel where he actively engaged in the election of an anti-pope to advocate for the papacy and eventually pope. A history of the Council of Basel is included as are two bulls from his pontificate. One bull condemns appeals from the Roman pontiff to a general council (Execrabilis), and the other (In minoribus) attempts to explain away the errors of his youth. In addition to an engaging general introduction, the book includes short narrative introductions to each letter placing it in proper context. The letters are generously annotated to assist readers in understanding the persons, places, and literary allusions discussed."--Publisher's website+-+979967863510177ocn000176358book19590.53PiusMemoirs of a Renaissance Pope : the Commentaries of Pius II : an abridgmentHistoryBiographySources4944ocn001331121book19620.47Mitchell, R. As a young man (and then still known as Enea Silvio Piccolomini), this pope had spent several years in the town and felt a strong affinity with it throughout his life. This volume begins with an examination of this prominent humanist (Arnold Esch) and describes the contexts of the founding of the university in a series of further articles. The other examined dimensions are the urban (Kaspar von Greyerz) and university (Rainer Schwinge) contexts, as well as the church (Amy Burnett) and art (Andreas Beyer)3657ocn052714589book0.66PiusCommentariesHistoryBiographySources+-+89166592152087ocn003433755book19080.70Boulting, WilliamÆneas Silvius (Enea Silvio de' Piccolomini--Pius II.) orator, man of letters, statesman, and popeHistoryBiography18911ocn001400229book19130.73Ady, Cecilia MPius II (Æneas Silvius Piccolomini) the humanist popeBiography+-+090049266632418816ocn006984570book18560.79Voigt, GeorgEneca Silvio de' Piccolomini, als Papst Pius der Zweite, und sein ZeitalterHistory1314ocn003039815book19670.90Kisch, GuidoEnea Silvio Piccolomini und die JurisprudenzHistory1223ocn004279670book19300.86Santayana, Silvio GeorgeTwo renaissance educators: Alberti and PiccolominiHistory1053ocn823263776com20130.76Salonen, KirsiEntering a clerical career at the Roman Curia, 1458-1471HistoryBuilding on recent revisionist histories of the quality and ability of the late medieval clergy, this is a comprehensive survey of the ordinations of priests at the Roman curia during the pontificates of Pius II (1458-1464) and Paul II (1464-1471). The study analyses archival documentation to reconstruct exactly how young men entered a clerical career, and also what influence practices at the curia had on wider clerical ordinations.
