168 editions published between 1570 and 2007 in 8 languages and held by 502 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ("Theatre of the World") is considered to be the first true modern atlas. Written by Abraham Ortelius and originally printed in 1570, the book consists of descriptive texts and dozens of maps printed from copper plates. The atlas is sometimes referred to as the summary of 16th-century cartography. Many of the maps in this atlas were based upon sources that no longer exist or are extremely rare. Ortelius appended a unique source list (the "Catalogus Auctorum") identifying the names of contemporary cartographers, some of whom would otherwise have remained obscure
