Primitivism and twentieth-century art : a documentary history( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and Italian and held by 723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Publisher's description: This book is the first to bring together texts documenting the encounter between Western artists and writers and what has historically been called primitive art--the traditional, indigenous arts of Africa, Oceania, and North America. Beginning with the "discovery" of that art by European artists and writers early in the twentieth century, this anthology charts the evolving pictorial responses, artistic aspirations, aesthetic theories, and cultural debates that have developed from this encounter. Written by artists, literary figures, collectors, museum curators, and cultural critics, these essays--most of them never before translated or reprinted--show the dazzling range of issues elicited by the confrontation with primitive arts and cultures. Primitivism designates not a specific movement or group of artists, but a persuasive notion crucial to twentieth-century art and modern thinking generally. Because the encounter between the West and primitive art took place at the height of Western colonialism, a number of racial and political issues come into play, either overtly or implicitly, in writings about both the art and the people who produced it. The contributions to this volume speak to each other in provocative ways, giving a unique overview of those issues. Jack Flam provides an introduction to the book and brief outlines for each of its four sections. Also included are a coda of quotations from artists and critics from throughout the century a chronology of events, exhibitions, and publications an extensive bibliography and over forty illustrations
Judith Rothschild : an artist's search by Jack D Flam( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 486 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This illustrated monograph accompanies a retrospective exhibition of paintings by Judith Rothschild (1921-1993) first seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and subsequently shown at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. It gives a detailed and intimate account of both Rothschild's art and life, skillfully weaving together the relationships between the development of her painting and the circumstances in which it was created, including the contemporaries who influenced her work. Also explored is the artist's interest in color theory, including its relation to musical notation."--BOOK JACKET. "Rothschild sought her imagery in the complex interaction between feelings, things, and ideas, and her late style was built on the unlikely combination of the sensual richness of Matisse's late cutouts and the geometric austerity of Mondrian. This led to the relief-painting technique that she employed for the last twenty years of her life, making it possible for her to create some of her most original and powerful works."--Jacket
Matisse in the Cone Collection : the poetics of vision by Jack D Flam( Book )

11 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Matisse in The Cone Collection: The Poetics of Vision is an exploration of the artist's work through the rich holdings of The Baltimore Museum of Art - one of the most comprehensive collections of Matisse's art in the world. The Cone sisters, Claribel and Etta, acquired their first works by Henri Matisse in 1906 and, over the next four decades, went on to collect major examples from almost every phase of his long career. Although best known for his vibrant paintings of exotically dressed young models and lush interiors, Matisse also worked in sculpture and drawing, often using these mediums to explore a single artistic idea in various ways. As revealed in The Cone Collection, Matisse expressed his love of color, texture, and pattern throughout a career that spanned many styles, from Impressionism to near abstraction."--Jacket
Richard Diebenkorn : Ocean Park by Jack D Flam( Book )

Scholar, particularly illuminates the historical sources of the Ocean Park paintings in regard to their relation to the original ambitions of modernism. In a career whose apparent contradictory nature has often placed this brilliantly dexterous painter at odds with any art establishment, Diebenkorn has profoundly persevered. The Ocean Park paintings - an ongoing series begun in 1967 - is the body of work most responsible for transforming Diebenkorn from a local painter
