A small varied group including a professor, an unscrupulous fortune hunter, a woman and two young men courting her, build a rocket financed by industrialists with the objective of mining gold supposedly on the moon. This is the first true space travel film which, like Metropolis, is weighed down by von Harbou's sentimental script. With some expert scientific advice, Lang paid considerable attention to bringing a sense of reality to the unconvincing fantasy. Both the British Foreign Office and the Nazis were perturbed by this sense of reality for opposing reasons. Perceiving it as a threat to the secretiveness of their V1 and V2 development programs the Nazis withdrew the film from circulation

5 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The German-American avant-garde filmmaker Oskar Fischinger is one of the main protagonists in the history of animation and abstract cinema. Fischinger created a new abstract film language that parallels and interacts with musical qualities. From the 1920s onward this pioneer of visual music coupled abstract images with music and rythms, long before the arrival of music video. Fishinger was a true virtuoso in the way he created highly complex animated films that develop dynamic rhythms, harmonies, and counterpoints. This monograph explores the position of Fishinger's work within the international avant-garde. It examines his animation and painting, his use of music, his experiences in Hollywood, and his influence on today's filmmakers, artists and animators

Viva la dance : the beginnings of ciné-dance( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dance and film have shared the aspiration to creatively sculpt motion and time. Some of the first films ever made featured Annabelle's skirt dance, hand-painted in glowing colours. Isadora Duncan and Ruth St Denis' innovations found their way into Diana the huntress (1916) and The soul of the cypress (1920). Highly cinematic renditions of dance evolved in Stella Simon's Hände (1928), Hector Hoppin's La joie de vivre (1934) and Busby Berkeley's "Don't say goodnight" from Wonder Bar (1934). In counterpoint, ciné-dance experiments by Ralph Steiner, Mary Ellen Bute, Oskar Fischinger, Douglass Crockwell, Slavko Vorkapich and Norman McLaren dispensed with actual dancers in favour of colour, shape, line and form choreographed into abstract light-play
