Karl V., der Kaiser, in dessen Reich die Sonne nicht unterging, steht an der Wende zweier Weltalter: 1500 im flämischen Gent geboren. 1558 im spanischen Kloster San Yuste als Einsiedler gestorben, war er in vielerlei Hinsicht die letzte Gestalt des Spätmittelalters, das in seiner Epoche mit der Reformation und der Entdeckung neuer welten zu Ende ging. Das gibt diesem Kaiser seinen tragischen Zug - den er wohl selber deutlich empfunden hat. Die Propheten und Astrologen sagten ihm ein Weltkaisertum voraus, aber die politische Wirklichkeit und nicht zuletzt Martin Luther stürzten ihn in immer neue Krisen. Und dennoch: Niemand vor ihm und niemand nach ihm hat jemals über mehr Länder regiert. Indem er den Aberwitz der Universalmonarchie durchschaute und am Ende freiwillig abdankte - ein unerhörter Vorgang - wird dieser unnahbare und rätselhafte Kaiser zugleich zum ersten Herrscher der Moderne
