Adaptive control of ill-defined systems by Oliver G Selfridge( Book )

11 editions published between 1981 and 1984 in English and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There are some types of complex systems that are built like clockwork, with well-defined parts that interact in well-defined ways, so that the action of the whole can be precisely analyzed and anticipated with accuracy and precision. Some systems are not themselves so well-defined, but they can be modeled in ways that are like trained pilots in well-built planes, or electrolyte balance in healthy humans. But there are many systems for which that is not true; and among them are many whose understanding and control we would value. For example, the model for the trained pilot above fails exactly where the pilot is being most human; that is, where he is exercising the highest levels of judgment, or where he is learning and adapting to new conditions. Again, sometimes the kinds of complexity do not lead to easily analyzable models at all; here we might include most economic systems, in all forms of societies. There are several factors that seem to contribute to systems being hard to model, understand, or control. The human participants may act in ways that are so variable or so rich or so interactive that the only adequate model of the system would be the entire system itself, so to speak. This is probably the case in true long term systems involving people learning and growing up in a changing society

Creation and Modeling of Adaptive Agent Systems( Book )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This project was dedicated to the development of multi-agent systems with nontrivial capabilities for adaptation and control in complex operational environments. The agents in such systems are based on control structures and processes that are inherently purpose-driven. The basic building blocks underlying the operation of purpose-driven agent systems are Elementary Adaptive Modules. EAMs have six elements: a purpose, an action, an action target, an activation, an evaluation function, and a set of control variables. EAMs can be passive or active. Passive EAMs, like servo-mechanisms, act in response to stimuli that are triggered in their external environment. Active EAMs, like hill-climbers, initiate probes in the outside world, evaluate the response, and change their behavior accordingly. EAM-based agents are cascaded to form multi-level systems whose control structures generate goal-oriented behaviors with greatly enhanced capabilities for adaptation and learning

The Gardens of Learning: A Vision for AI by Oliver G Selfridge( )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The field of AI is directed at the fundamental problem of how the mind works; its approach, among other things, is to try to simulate its working -- in bits and pieces. History shows us that mankind has been trying to do this for certainly hundreds of years, but the blooming of current computer technology has sparked an explosion in the research we can now do. The center of AI is the wonderful capacity we call learning, which the field is paying increasing attention to. Learning is difficult and easy, complicated and simple, and most research doesn't look at many aspects of its complexity. However, we in the AI field are starting. Let us now celebrate the efforts of our forebears and rejoice in our own efforts, so that our successors can thrive in their research. This article is the substance, edited and adapted, of the keynote address given at the 1992 annual meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence on 14 July in San Jose, California
