The meaning of anxiety by Rollo May( Book )

55 editions published between 1950 and 2015 in English and Chinese and held by 2,949 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the result of several years of exploration, research, and thought on one of the most urgent problems of our day. Clinical experience has proved to psychologists and psychiatrists generally that the central problem in psychotherapy is the nature of anxiety. To the extent that we have been able to solve that problem, we have made a beginning in understanding the causes of integration and disintegration of personality. This study seeks to bring together in one volume the theories of anxiety offered by modern explorers in different areas of our culture, to discover the common elements in these theories, and to formulate these concepts so that we shall have some common ground for further inquiry. If the synthesis of anxiety theory presented here serves the purpose of producing some coherence and order in this field, a good part of the writer's goal will have been achieved. For those interested in a comparative survey of modern schools of psychotherapy, this volume should serve as a convenient textbook, presenting as it does the views of a dozen leaders in this field. There is no better way to understand these various schools than to compare their theories of anxiety. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
The courage to create by Rollo May( Book )

68 editions published between 1972 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 2,839 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What if imagination and art are not, as many of us might think, the frosting on life, but the fountainhead of human experience? What if our logic and science derive from art forms, rather than the other way around? In this trenchant volume, Rollo May helps all of us find those creative impulses that, once liberated, offer new possibilities for achievement. A renowned therapist and inspiring guide, Dr. May draws on his experience to show how we can break out of old patterns in our lives. His insightful book offers us a way through our fears into a fully realized self
Man's search for himself by Rollo May( Book )

58 editions published between 1953 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 2,629 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Out of his experience in helping people work out their difficulties, May wrote this book in an effort to help the individual come to terms with himself. He shows the ways in which we can stand against the insecurity of this age and find a center of strength within ourselves. He sheds light on some of the things that underlie our feelings of disturbance and conflict. Writing with directness and simplicity, he speaks of the loss of certainties suffered in our rapidly changing society. He points the way toward values and goals that can be depended on in a day when very little is secure. And he shows how we can gain a real awareness of self that will bring us freedom and courage.--Adapted from dust jacket

Existence : a new dimension in psychiatry and psychology by Rollo May( Book )

59 editions published between 1958 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,756 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book represents the fruition of four years labor--most of it, fortunately, a labor of love. The idea of translating these papers, originating with Ernest Angel, was welcomed by Basic Books because of their enthusiasm for bringing out significant new material in the sciences of man. I was glad to accept their invitation to participate as one of the editors since I, too, had long been convinced of the importance of making these works available in English, particularly at this crucial moment in the development of modern psychiatry and psychology. We asked Dr. Ellenberger to join us as the third editor because of his extensive knowledge of the literature of phenomenological and existential psychiatry and his clinical experience in using these methods in Switzerland. He and Mr. Angel are chiefly responsible for the selection of the particular papers translated. In our introductory chapters, Dr. Ellenberger and I have undertaken the task of making a bridge between these contributions and American psychiatry and psychology, while Mr. Angel has borne the major weight of the translations themselves"--Préf. The discovery of being : writings in existential psychology by Rollo May( Book )

23 editions published between 1983 and 2015 in English and held by 1,753 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Out of long experience in helping people with their problems, Rollo May now offers his views on the healing art itself. He takes us beyond traditional psychology and psychiatry that emphasize the achievement of satisfactions but overlook the individual's deep-seated purposes and values, like prestige, power, and tenderness. These human concerns are so fundamental that they take on greater importance in life than survival itself. 'When you see a person as a composite of drives and deterministic forces, ' Dr. May writes, 'you have everything except the one to whom these experiences happen, everything except the existing person himself.' Rollo May is not one of those who are content to label neurosis a failure of adjustment. 'An adjustment is exactly what a neurosis is; and that is just its trouble. It is a necessary adjustment by which a person's centeredness can be preserved, a way of accepting nonbeing in order that some little being may be preserved. And in most cases it is a boon which this adjustment breaks down.' The Discovery of Being is addressed to all concerned with the causes of loneliness and isolation and with the search to find new and firm mooring posts in an age of anxiety."--Jacket
