Sun Yat-sen, frustrated patriot by C. Martin Wilbur( Book )

15 editions published between 1976 and 1986 in 4 languages and held by 1,092 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this study, the author traces the major influences shaping Dr. Sun's personality and delineates the main lines of his frustrated political life. Two neglected but important aspects are emphasized: his thirty-year fund-raising efforts among overseas Chinese and foreign entrepreneurs and his largely unsuccessful attempts -- with a few startling exceptions -- to acquire support from each of the important foreign powers"--Jacket

Missionaries of revolution : Soviet advisers and Nationalist China, 1920-1927 by C. Martin Wilbur( Book )

11 editions published in 1989 in 3 languages and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the 1920s the Soviet Union made a determined effort to stimulate revolution in China by sending several scores of military and political advisers there, as well as arms and money to influence political developments. The usual secrecy surrounding Soviet foreign intervention was broken when the Chinese government seized a mass of documents in a raid on the Soviet military headquarters in Peking in 1927. 'Missionaries of Revolution' includes a full history of this adventure and a large selection of documents with full annotation. This two-part book is the most complete in the field."--Book cover, [p. 4]
The nationalist revolution in China, 1923-1928 by C. Martin Wilbur( Book )

19 editions published between 1983 and 1985 in English and held by 412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This lively history of China's Nationalist revolution tells the story of a small group of Chinese patriots headed by Sun Yat-sen until his death in 1925. They mobilised men, money, and propaganda to create a provincial base from which they launched a revolutionary military campaign to unify the country, end imperialist privilege, and bring the Kuomintang to power. Soviet Russia induced the fledgling Chinese Communist Party to join the effort, and sent money, arms, military and political experts to guide the revolution. But there was a fatal flaw in this co-operation, and when the fighting was over, the remnant Communist Party had been driven underground, the Russian experts had been expelled, and a faction-riven Nationalist Party led by Chiang Kai-shek could claim to be China's new government. This study of a key period in China's history, reprinted from Volume 12 of The Cambridge History of China, is solidly based in Chinese, Russian, and Western languages sources

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Men of history sometimes make history. The distinguished career of C. Martin Wilbur, who spent twenty-nine years as Professor of Chinese History at Columbia University, illustrates this point. Based on journals, letters, and other records, and richly illustrated with photographs from the author's private collection, China in My Life is the autobiographical account of a scholar-teacher who devoted his career to the study of Chinese history and the promotion of Asian studies in America. Over the course of sixty years, starting with his early years in China in the 1920s and 1930s, Wilbur reflects on and details the growth of an academic discipline in this country as well as vast changes in the Asian historical landscape, including developments in Japan and Taiwan over a thirty-five-year period, conditions in Korea, Hong Kong, India, Burma, and Thailand in the 1950s, and the situation in the People's Republic of China in the 1980s
