Image and pilgrimage in Christian culture : anthropological perspectives by Victor W Turner( Book )

41 editions published between 1978 and 2011 in English and held by 1,917 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published in 1978 and hailed as ""an important foreshadowing of issues that have become prominent in more recent anthropology, "" this classic work examines the theological doctrines, popular notions, and corresponding symbols and images promoting and sustaining Christian pilgrimage. The text examines two major aspects of pilgrimage practice: the significance of context, or the theological conditions that give rise to pilgrimage and the folk traditions that enable worshippers to absorb the meaning of the event; and the images and symbols that embody the experience of pilgrimage and t
The ritual process: structure and anti-structure by Victor W Turner( Book )

129 editions published between 1961 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 1,912 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure, Victor Turner examines rituals of the Ndembu in Zambia and develops his concept of "Communitas," which in the meantime has become famous. He characterizes it as an absolute inter-human relation beyond any form of structure. The Ritual Process has acquired the status of a small classic since these lectures were first published in 1969. Turner demonstrates how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. He extends Van Gennep's notion of the "liminal phase" of rites of passage to a more general level, and applies it to gain understanding of a wide range of social phenomena. Once thought to be the "vestigial" organs of social conservatism, rituals are now seen as arenas in which social change may emerge and be absorbed into social practice. As Roger Abrahams writes in his foreword to the revised edition: "Turner argued from specific field data. His special eloquence resided in his ability to lay open a sub-Saharan African system of belief and practice in terms that took the reader beyond the exotic features of the group among whom he carried out his fieldwork, translating his experience into the terms of contemporary Western perceptions. Reflecting Turner's range of intellectual interests, the book emerged as an exceptional and eccentric in many ways: yet it achieved its place within the intellectual world because it so successfully synthesized continental theory with the practices of ethnographic reports."--Publisher description

55 editions published between 1981 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"How is social action related to aesthetics, and anthropology to theatre? What is the meaning of such concepts as "work," "play, "liminal," and "flow"? In this highly influential book, Turner elaborates on ritual and theatre, persona and individual, role-playing and performing, taking examples from American, European, and African societies for a greater understanding of culture and its symbols."--Back cover

Political anthropology by American Anthropological Association( Book )

29 editions published between 1966 and 2017 in English and held by 996 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Politics: a static network of structural and functional models? Is it a "given" set of rules, statuses and procedures? Or a dynamic process, a continuum related to the past as well as to the present and continually influenced by pressures within and outside of a society? Taking the latter view of the nature of political behavior, the editors of Political Anthropology here present an original compilation of papers that thoroughly assess contemporary anthropological research and theory on political phenomena and explore the sources and maintenance of political power. One of the aims of this book is to take tentative steps toward resolving the developing crisis by investigating the structure of political action revealed in empirical data. Within the general framework of political dynamics the book uses processes such as decision making, the judicial process, the disturbance and settlement of policy issues, the application of sanctions, and the outcome of disputes among other things. These items will find their places as components of phases in the major sequence. Investigating societies from Africa to Alaska, politics is shown to be a global phenomenon--a "human process of action" centering on the conflict between the "common good" and "interests of groups," and on the resolution or extension of that conflict by the religious, structural, sociocultural, and psychological pressures within and external to a social grouping. Essential reading for anyone concerned with the nature of political process, Political Anthropology presents a fresh, important and comprehensive overview of the "wind of change" currently abroad in the study of political behavior."--Provided by publisher
Schism and continuity in an African society; a study of Ndembu village life by Victor W Turner( Book )

61 editions published between 1957 and 1996 in English and German and held by 872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book focuses on the village life of the Ndembu of Zambia who were then under British rule. The social constraints, such as the matrilineally-inherited headmanship system, and the various releases from these constraints, provoked periodic crises which caused great disruption and pain. These crises made visible the contradictions between the principles governing social life and the conflicts experienced between individuals and groups when enforcing these principles. Seven social dramas are discussed - all from one family over a period of twenty years -- each substantiated by sociological and demographic research. -- Publisher description

Between theater & anthropology by Richard Schechner( Book )

11 editions published between 1985 and 2010 in English and held by 777 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For over two decades Richard Schechner has written about the theater in a manner which ignores the dreary convention of drama as literature and which instead draws attention to the physical fact of live performance. In his recent book, Between Theater and Anthropology, Schechner considers live events or aspects of live events which fall outside common Euro-American definitions of dramatic performance and theater. He broadens the idea of 'performance' to include a wide range of social, ritual, and media activities: East Indian ritual dancing, trance-inducing spiritual song, stories on the Six O'clock News, S/M parlors and sideshows, and numerous other paratheatrical events - scripted and un-scripted, ritual and aesthetic, domestic and exotic. The seven essays included in Between Theater and Anthropology do not build upon each other in a progressive fashion: instead they individually explore unorthodox performance modes proposed in the introductory chapter. This first chapter illuminates 'Points of Contact' between the studies of theater and anthropology. Theater people can help anthropologists identify what to look for in a training or performance situation; and anthropologists can help theater people see performances within the context of specific social systems

Blazing the trail : way marks in the exploration of symbols by Victor W Turner( Book )

10 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Victor Turner (1920-1983) stands as one of the leading anthropologists of the twentieth century, known especially for his work on the process of ritual. This new collection of Turner's writings gathers seven late pieces that reflect his thoughts on such subjects as pilgrimage, sacrifice, and liminal processes. In them he reveals his debt to Freud, his views on morality, and always his fascination with ritual. Representative of Turner's mature scholarship, these essays will be of interest to scholars in literature, mythology, and religion. With its emphasis on symbolic studies, Blazing the Trail serves as a companion volume to the earlier collection of Turner's essays On the Edge of the Bush (Arizona, 1986), which focused on process and performance. The present collection includes a biographical and critical essay by Edith Turner
