Volume 3 consists of individual chapters describing the native people in California. The preface explains that the reader must set aside their concepts of native people based on the Dakota or the tribes found on the East Coast. Information was gathered mainly in the 1870s (largely between 1871 and 1872) and the work consists of descriptions of customs, fables, tatoos, culture, tools, weapons, worship,songs, botany and other important aspects of cultural and social life. Each tribe described contains a unique information set to describe aspects of life experienced with the tribe during the survey
