The savage god : a study of suicide by A Alvarez( Book )

78 editions published between 1971 and 2013 in English and held by 2,495 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores suicide as it has never been described before. It is a deep compassionate insight into the realm of self-destruction from a personal, literary, and existential point of view. The author dispels the preconception that suicide is either a terrifying aberration or something to be ignored altogether. He documents and explores historically man's changing attitudes toward suicide: from the various primitive societies, the Greek and Roman cultures, to the development of the suicidal martyrdom of the early Christian church, the later concept of suicide as a mortal sin to be savagely punished, and the counterrevolutionary attitude of the late nineteenth century which shifted the responsibility of suicide from the individual to society. He continues with a discussion of the theories which have been developed about suicide. From there, he explores the minds and emotional states of Dante, Cowper, Donne, Chatterton, and others, explaining the death trend in their works. He sees revealed in literature the voyage of the suicide in past centuries and today. He returns to a personal view of suicide at the close of the book as he chronicles his attempt on his own life. He brings the reader through a journey where one sees the act of suicide as the end of a long experience, an emptiness so isolated and violent--making life into such a paper-thin reality--that it surrenders.--

Feeding the rat : profile of a climber by A Alvarez( Book )

9 editions published between 1988 and 2003 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a portrait of Mo Anthoine who has been climbing all over the world for almost 30 years. For him, the challenge of the mountain is what he calls "feeding the rat" - the need to get out, to test yourself and, above all, to have some fun. Although his name is almost unknown to outsiders, he is famous in the climbing world both for his talent as a mountaineer and for his anarchic attitude to the sport. He is adamant that is is not a sport, but a pastime and the main object is to have a good time. He has climbed all over the world - in Britain, the Alps, the Himalayas, the Karakoram, New Zealand, Alaska, the Andes, Patagonia and the South American jungle. A.Alvarez has known Mo since 1964 and climbed with him often and this book includes accounts of two of their near disasters - one in the Dolomites, the other on the Old Man of Hoy

Night : an exploration of night life, night language, sleep and dreams by A Alvarez( Book )

12 editions published between 1994 and 1996 in English and Dutch and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A. Alvarez examines night in all its aspects. How do we light it? How do we inhabit it and make it safe? In what "languages" do we dream? The search moves from the neon-lit brilliance of Las Vegas to the shadowy underworld patrolled by the police. We visit a sleep laboratory, where scientists try to understand what happens to our bodies and in our brains when sleep claims us. Alvarez shows how "night horrors" inspired and terrified Coleridge, and how dreams liberated the minds of Stevenson and the Surrealists. He talks about his own childhood fears and explores the secret world of the unconscious. Through a highly original and accessible account of the thoughts of Freud, Jung, and their modern-day counterparts, as well as the latest scientific theories, Alvarez reveals how deeply dreams and the unconscious color and fashion our waking lives."--BOOK JACKET
