George I, elector and king by Ragnhild Marie Hatton( Book )

25 editions published between 1978 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ragnhild Hatton's biography is the only comprehensive account of George's life and reign. It draws on a wide range of archival sources in several languages to illuminate the fascinating details of George's early life and dynastic crises, his plans and ambitions for the British nation, the impact of his rationalist ideas and his accomplishments as king. The book also examines George's personal life, his family relationships in both Prussia and England, his private interest in music and the arts and the improvement of his British and Hanoverian properties."--Jacket
Europe in the age of Louis XIV by Ragnhild Marie Hatton( Book )

33 editions published between 1963 and 1979 in 4 languages and held by 1,200 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The period covered by this book, 1648-1721, does not coincide exactly with Louis XIV's reign : 1643-1715. Yet it would have been perverse and unhistorical to omit his name from the title, for, though Professor Hatton ranges widely over Europe in her survey, it is impossible to exaggerate the importance, both as a catalyst and as an example, of the France which Louis symbolized. During the Age of Louis XIV, Europe developed a cosmopolitan civilization. The reasons for this are examined in chapters on society and economic life; the effects of it are traced in chapters on art, literature and the intellectual climate of opinion. The author analyzes those features which mark the 'Early Enlightenment' : the possibility of progress, the concept of social utility and the demand for free enquiry and rational reform; and she argues that, in a period which saw much war, the idea of a tribunal of Europe struck firm root. Examples and illustrations are chosen from almost every European country, and cover such diverse topics as population and mobility, class and calling, domsetic issues, the arts, literature and learning, and the impact of other continents on Europe. -- Inside cover

Royal and republican sovereignty in early modern Europe : essays in memory of Ragnhild Hatton( Book )

11 editions published between 1997 and 2006 in English and held by 341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This substantial collection of specially commissioned chapters addresses the theme of sovereignty and the sources and variety of political power in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe, from Russia to Spain and from the Italian peninsula to the Dutch Republic."--BOOK JACKET. "A unifying theme, taken up in a substantial editorial introduction, is the determination to move away from cliches such as 'the rise of the modern state'. Instead, emphasis is placed upon the composite nature of early modern political structures and upon the significant number of bodies and individuals who were recognised as possessing, or who exercised, sovereignty. One particularly notable and novel feature is the attention paid to the potential of visual material for this subject: many of the chapters are accompanied by striking and often little-known illustrations. Topics are as diverse as international relations and the control of foreign policy, the cultural policies and political ambitions of representational monarchy, urban developments, and the personalities of those who exercised authority. These diverse themes were all illuminated by the writings of Professor Ragnhild Hatton (1913-95), to whose memory this collection is dedicated."--Jacket
