Islamic spirituality : foundations by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

63 editions published between 1986 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 1,547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first book in the English language to deal with the spiritual significance of Islamic art including not only the plastic arts, but also literature and music. Rather than only dealing with the history of the various arts of Islam or their description, the author relates the form, content, symbolic language, meaning, and presence of these arts to the very sources of the Islamic revelation. Relying upon his extensive knowledge of the Islamic religion in both its exoteric and esoteric dimensions as well as the various Islamic sciences, the author relates Islamic art to the inner dimensions of the Islamic revelation and the spirituality which has issued from it. He brings out the spiritual significance of the Islamic arts ranging from architecture to music as seen, heard, and experienced by one living within the universe of the Islamic tradition. In this work the reader is made to understand the meaning of Islamic art for those living within the civilization which created it
Ideals and realities of Islam by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

96 editions published between 1966 and 2009 in 6 languages and held by 1,495 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present book contains six lectures out of a series of fifteen public lectures delivered by Dr. Nasr during the time he held the chair of Aga Khan Professor of Islamic Studies in the American University of Beirut (1964-65). These public lectures concern the religion of Islam and the diverse aspects of the civilization it produced. "Ideals and Realities of Islam" has been primarily written for those Western readers who are interested in Islam. The book comprises six chapters dealing with Islam and discussing precisely the Qur'an, the Prophet, the Sharfah or Divine Law, the Tariqah or Sufism, and Sunnism and Shi'ism. The author has, in his scholarly manner, elucidated the major aspects of the Islamic tradition and has made frequent comparisons with other religions, notably with Christianity, which meets Islam in Lebanon. In these essays, Professor Nasr has presented what is most universal in Islam and underlies the beliefs of all the orthodox branches of the tradition. -- Abridged from http://www.jstor.org (Oct. 8, 2014)
Traditional Islam in the modern world by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

35 editions published between 1987 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As Muslims grow in numbers, and as Islam's role in world affairs becomes larger, we've begun to see the breakdown in a united fellowship among believers. Certainly the misunderstandings and friction between Islamic civilization and the modern West continue. But even within Islam, Iran's clerics are split, militant fundamentalists clash with students from Islamic universities, moderate Muslim-Americans look nothing like wahhabis from Saudi Arabia. Islam seems to be at war with itself. Extremist factions whose self-righteous rhetoric currently shapes our fears and prejudices have attempted to co-opt the Islamic faith. In Islam in the Modern World, one of the foremost Islamic scholars in the United States takes that faith back, describing and defending traditional Islam against all critics-without and within the faith. Increasingly relevant in today's world, this book hits all the hot button issues of current political concern to the West: holy wars, women's roles in Islam, the rise of fundamentalism, and the future of Shi'ism in Iran. In addition, the author explores lesser-known controversies within Islam, such as the challenge of modern science to religious belief, controversial art and architecture in Islamic cities, the role of the madrassas in education, and urban conditions and challenges in the Islamic world. Islam in the Modern World offers a steady guide through an increasingly factious religion with increasing global relevance"--

"In The Heart of Islam one of the great intellectual figures in Islamic history offers a timely presentation of the core spiritual and social values of Islam: peace, compassion, social justice, and respect for the other. Seizing this unique moment in history to reflect on the essence of his tradition, Seyyed Hossein Nasr seeks to "open a spiritual and intellectual space for mutual understanding." Exploring Islamic values in scripture, traditional sources, and history, he also shows their clear counterparts in the Jewish and Christian traditions, revealing the common ground of the Abrahamic faiths." "The Heart of Islam is a landmark presentation of enduring value that offers hope to humanity, and a compelling portrait of the beauty and appeal of the faith of 1.2 billion people."--Jacket

The garden of truth : the vision and promise of Sufism, Islam's mystical tradition by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

19 editions published between 2007 and 2009 in English and Persian and held by 981 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The headlines are filled with the politics of Islam, but there is another side to the world's fastest-growing religion. Sufism is the poetry and mysticism of Islam. This mystical movement from the early ninth century rejects worship motivated by the desire for heavenly reward or the fear of punishment, insisting rather on the love of God as the only valid form of adoration. Sufism has made significant contributions to Islamic civilization in music and philosophy, dance and literature. The Sufi poet Rumi is the bestselling poet in America. But in recent centuries Sufism has been a target for some extremist Islamic movements as well as many modernists. The Garden of Truth presents the beliefs and vision of the mystical heart of Islam, along with a history of Sufi saints and schools of thought

An introduction to Islamic cosmological doctrines; conceptions of nature and methods used for its study by the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʼ, al-Bīrūnī, and Ibn Sīnā by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

22 editions published between 1964 and 1993 in English and held by 754 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the only book to deal with classical Islamic cosmology as it was formulated by the Ikhwan al-S'afa al Biruni and Ibn Sina during the tenth and eleventh centuries. These figures influenced all the later centuries of Islamic history and in fact created the cosmological framework within which all later scientific activity in the Islamic world was carried out--the enduring image of the cosmos within which Muslims have lived during the past millennium. Nasr writes from within the Islamic tradition and demonstrates how, based on the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet, the figures treated in this work integrated elements drawn from various ancient schools of philosophy and the sciences. This book is unique in its treatment of classical Islamic cosmology as seen from within the Islamic world-view and provides a key for understanding of traditional Islamic thought. -- Back cover

Islamic philosophy from its origin to the present : philosophy in the land of prophecy by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

9 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Islamic Philosophy from Its Origin to the Present offers a comprehensive overview of Islamic philosophy from the ninth century to the present day. As Seyyed Hossein Nasr attests, within this tradition, philosophizing is done in a world in which prophecy is the central reality of life - a reality related not only to the realms of action and ethics but also to the realm of knowledge. Comparisons with Jewish and Christian philosophies highlight the relation between reason and revelation, that is, philosophy and religion."--Jacket

19 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book deals with the meaning of a science rooted in the sacred, the metaphysical foundation of such science, its contrast to modern science and its pertinence to some of the major issues facing humanity today. In the first part, the author turns to the fundamental question of the multiplicity of sacred forms. He discusses why it is necessary in the contemporary world to treat sacred science in the context of diverse religions. He also deals with the importance of sacred science in providing a meaningful study that would remain religiously significant of religions themselves.--provided by publisher

An anthology of philosophy in Persia by Seyyed Hossein Nasr( Book )

7 editions published between 2001 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The tradition of philosophy in the Persian-speaking world is extraordinarily rich, creative and diverse. This anthology, which is divided into three volumes, aims to communicate something of that richness and diversity. The term "philosophy" is understood to in its widest sense to include theological debate, philosophical Sufism and philosophical hermeneutics (ta'wil). Extending over a period of more than two millennia, and showcasing translations by well-established scholars, the anthologyoffers full bibliographical references throughout. For anyone interested in exploring, in all their varied manifestations, the fascinating philosophical traditions of Persia, such a wide-ranging and ambitious work will be an indispensable resource. & nbsp; Volume 2 covers five centuries of Ismaili philosophy, and includes extracts from outstanding Ismaili works including the Rasa'il Ikhwan al-Safa (Treatises of the Brethren of Purity) and the philosophical odes of Nasir Khusraw. It is of great significance that, in the early centuries of Islam, philosophers were influenced by Pythagorean and Hermetic ideas, which are usually associated with Shi'i thought in general and Ismailism in particular. Ismaili philosophy at this time was able to integrate strands of Greco-Alexandrian thought such as Hermeticism and Neo-Pythagoreanism, as well as aspects of Mazdaeism and Manichaeism. It also showed marked interest in Neo-Platonism
Religious pluralism in Christian and Islamic philosophy : the thought of John Hick and Seyyed Hossein Nasr by Adnan Aslan( Book )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The philosophy of religion and theology are related to the culture in which they have developed. These disciplines provide a source of values and vision to the cultures of which they are part, while at the same time they are delimited and defined by their cultures. This book compares the ideas of two contemporary philosophers, John Hick and Seyyed Hossein Nasr, on the issues of religion, religions, the concept of the ultimate reality, and the notion of sacred knowledge. On a broader level, it compares two world-views: the one formed by Western Christian culture, which is religious in int
