The Cambridge history of Islam by P. M Holt( Book )

73 editions published between 1970 and 2008 in English and Multiple languages and held by 2,125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work aims to present to the reader a narrative of the several threads of Islamic history over a period of more than 13 centuries, in an area extending from Spain and Morocco to South East Asia. In view of this enormous perspective and the fact that only two volumes must fulfil the task, the editors are naturally explicit about the book's limitations: it is intended primarily for general readers of history, for students of history, and particularly for students of Oriental disciplines (I, p. ix). While not claiming to present any exhaustive definitive account, the editors have shown a keen awareness of the shortcomings and gaps in much of the secondary material previously recommended to students and general readers, and have tried 'to offer an authoritative guide to the state of knowledge at the present day, and to provide a sound foundation on which to build' (I, p. xviii). -- From http://www.jstor.org (Nov. 25, 2016)
A history of the Sudan : from the coming of Islam to the present day by P. M Holt( Book )

60 editions published between 1969 and 2017 in English and Arabic and held by 1,458 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this fifth edition of P. M. Holt and M. W. Daly's well-known History of the Sudan, the authors describe the making of the modern Sudan." "This book is more than just a political narrative. Professor Holt and Daly explain how the modern Sudan has been shaped by three key elements in its history; the influence of the Ottoman Empire; the impact of British domination; and, above all else, the enduring indigenous tradition of the region, produced by the intermingling of its African and Arab Muslim inheritance, which forms the basis of Sudanese nationality, religion and culture." "This new, fully revised and updated edition of A History of the Sudan is an ideal introduction for students, scholars and general readers."--BOOK JACKET

The Age of the Crusades : the Near East from the eleventh century to 1517 by P. M Holt( Book )

47 editions published between 1986 and 2014 in English and Polish and held by 847 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The kaleidoscopic political changes during the years covered by this volume include the rise and fall of the Crusader states, the expansion of the Mongol empire, the rise of the Mamluk sultanate and of its ultimate conquerors, the Ottomans. To all of these Professor Holt is a clear and skilful guide. He principally utilises, and to some extent reinterprets, the medieval Arabic sources, to present a picture which differs in important respects from the conventional western-orientated view

Alliances and treaties between Frankish and Muslim rulers in the Middle East : cross-cultural diplomacy in the period of the Crusades by Michael A Köhler( )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 555 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Alliances and Treaties between Frankish and Muslim Rulers Michael Köhler presents a fully integrated study of Frankish-Muslim diplomacy in the period from the First Crusade through to the thirteenth century. It is a ground-breaking study that challenges preconceived notions of the relations between Frankish and Muslim rulers in the Middle East. Commonly portrayed as an era of conflict, the period appears here as one in which conventions of diplomatic cooperation were commonplace. This book is one of the few works in the fields of Crusader Studies and Middle Eastern Studies that draws to the same extent on Arabic and Western sources; two textual traditions that have usually been studied in isolation from each other"--Back cover

11 editions published between 1970 and 2016 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From Byzantium to the Mongols to the Sultans of Rum, this acclaimed book offers an important insight into the evocative history of Turkey before the coming of Ottoman power. Turkey forms a historical bridge between Europe and Asia and as such has played a pivotal role throughout history. The rise of Constantinople and the later Ottoman Empire are well known: less well understood are developments in the three centuries in-between. What led to the decline of the Byzantine Empire and what happened in the intervening years before the rise of the Ottomans? Translated from the original Fr
Early Mamluk diplomacy, 1260-1290 : treaties of Baybars and Qalāwūn with Christian rulers by P. M Holt( Book )

12 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Early Mamluk Diplomacy is based on treaties between the Mamluk sultans of Egypt, Baybars (1260-77) and Qalawun (1279-90), and Christian rulers. The General Introduction describes the Arabic literary sources in which these treaties have been transmitted. Their status under Islamic law is examined, followed by a description of negotiation procedures, and an account of diplomatic relations with the Christian powers. Three treaties are with the military Orders, four with Beirut, Tripoli, the Latin kingdom and Tyre, and four others with Lesser Armenia, Aragon, the Byzantine Empire and Genoa. Each has an introduction giving its historical background. The work offers Islamic historians and European medievalists documentary evidence of a kind rare in pre-modern Middle Eastern history, casting light on commercial and social as well as diplomatic relations

10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 182 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work is an annotated translation of the Funj Chronicle, the only full-length Arabic account of the Nilotic Sudan from 910/1504-5 to 1288/1871, produced by a succession of nineteenth-century Sudanese writers. The earlier part is based on a king-list of the Funj dynasty of Sinnar. From the mid-twelfth/eighteenth century an increasingly detailed narrative describes the rule of the Hamaj regents, the conquest by Muhammad 'Ali Pasha's forces and the first half-century of Turco-Egyptian government. The translator's Introduction discusses the textual history, structure and authorship of the Chronicle, while four Appendixes provide supplementary materials
