The MARC II format : a communications format for bibliographic data by Henriette D Avram( Book )

17 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 323 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Utilizing both the experience gained from the Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) Pilot Project, which tested the feasibility of distributing Library of Congress cataloging in machine readable form to various users, and the results of extensive consultation with the library community and persons at the Library of Congress, a format for communication of bibliographic data, MARC II, has been devised. It is designed to have sufficient flexibility to serve as the standardized communications format for a wide variety of bibliographic data. The basic format has the following parts: (1) a leader which identifies and describes the record, its length and its effect on the file, (2) a directory which is essentially an index to the location of the variable fields within the record, (3) a control number which is the unique number assigned to the record, (4) variable fixed fields, which are the fixed fields which would appear in a given type of record, but which vary in number and length among the different types of records, and (5) variable fields which may not be present in all records of a given types. The use of the format is shown in the cataloging of monographs, demonstrating how each of the elements on a catalog card would be transcribed into MARC II format. Also included in this report is "The MARC II Format, Supplement One", including additional changes designed to make the format more flexible and to simplify the structure. (CM)
National aspects of creating and using MARC/RECON records by RECON Working Task Force( Book )

15 editions published in 1973 in English and Undetermined and held by 288 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Retrospective Conversion (recon) Working Task Force investigated the problems of converting retrospective catalog records to machine readable form. The major conclusions and recommendations of the Task Force cover five areas: the level of machine-readable records, conversion of other machine-readable data bases, a machine-readable National Union Catalog (nuc), an alternative strategy for recon and general recommendations. It is concluded that: 1) full marc (machine-readable cataloging code) format for machine-readable records is needed to distribute cataloging information, but that it is feasible to use less complete records for the nuc; 2) the projected cost of converting other machine-readable data bases are comparable to or less than those for the present per record marc/recon cost depending upon the method of updating; 3) data bases should be ranked by size and completeness of records; 4) standards should be established for reporting the form and contents of data bases; 5) automation of the nuc would cut time and costs and increase access points to the data. A centralized agency is recommended for large scale conversion activity of the retrospective Library of Congress records and other libraries. (Jg)
Conversion of retrospective catalog records to machine-readable form; a study of the feasibility of a national bibliographic service by RECON Working Task Force( Book )

16 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report examines (1) the present state of the art of hardware and software applicable to large-scale conversion, storage, and retrieval of retrospective bibliographic information; (2) the organizational and administrative aspects of the task; (3) costs of hardware, software, and manpower; and (4) possible approaches to the timing and funding of the project. The main body of the report examines the various problems involved and explores possible solutions. It is concluded that (1) the marc (Machine Readable Cataloging) service should be expanded to cover all languages and forms of material; (2) conversion for a national bibliographic data base requires standardization of bibliographic content and machine format; and (3) large-scale conversion should be accomplished as a centralized project. Appendices discuss (1) duplication (overlap) in U.S. library collections, (2) actual and planned data conversion activities in selected libraries, (3) a summary of interviews with consultants, (4) the history and future of Library of Congress (lc) catalog records, (5) changes in lc catalog cards, (6) completeness of machine-readable catalog records, (7) format recognition, (8) computer requirements for a national bibliographic service, and (9) staff complement and unit costs. MARC, its history and implications by Henriette D Avram( Book )

14 editions published between 1975 and 1977 in English and Spanish and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Library of Congress presents the history of its Machine Readable Cataloging (marc) system. Descriptions of marc pilot projects and distribution services are followed by a discussion of several conversion projects undertaken by libraries in order to implement marc. Then MARC's influence on standardization of formats for information interchange, bibliographic discription, content designators, and other activities is evaluated. The document concludes with a description of the use of marc at the Library of Congress and by subscribers. Some 170 references and bibliographic citations dating from 1960 to 1974 are provided. (Ch)
