26 editions published between 1997 and 2003 in 3 languages and held by 1,961 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition asthe Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It isrestricted to one field that of mathematics and an age limitof 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the mainbeen interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonablesince major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been)recognized with Nobel Prizes
Introduction to commutative algebra by Michael Francis Atiyah ( )
37 editions published between 1969 and 2010 in English and Italian and held by 1,568 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book grew out of a course of lectures given to third year undergraduates at Oxford University and it has the modest aim of producing a rapid introduction to the subject. It is designed to be read
Representation theory of Lie groups proceedings of the SRC/LMS Research Symposium on Representations of Lie Groups, Oxford, 28 June-15 July 1977 by SRC/LMS Research Symposium on Representations of Lie Groups ( )
13 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 890 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Lie groups and their representations occupy an important place in mathematics with applications in such diverse fields as differential geometry, number theory, differential equations and physics. In 1977 a symposium was held in Oxford to introduce this rapidly developing and expanding subject to non-specialists. This volume contains the lectures of ten distinguished mathematicians designed to provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the fundamental theory and appreciate the range of results. This volume contains much to interest mathematicians and theoretical physicists from advanced undergraduate level upwards
A Community of Scholars Impressions of the Institute for Advanced Study by Institute for Advanced Study ( )
5 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 843 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This beautifully illustrated anthology celebrates eighty years of history and intellectual inquiry at the Institute for Advanced Study, one of the world's leading centers for theoretical research. Featuring essays by current and former members and faculty along with photographs by Serge J-F. Levy, this book captures the spirit of curiosity, freedom, and comradeship that is a hallmark of this unique community of scholars. Founded in 1930 in Princeton, New Jersey, the institute encourages and supports fundamental research in the sciences and humanities--the original, often speculative thinking that can transform how we understand our world. Albert Einstein was among the first in a long line of brilliant thinkers to be affiliated with the institute. They include Kurt Gdel, George Kennan, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Erwin Panofsky, Homer A. Thompson, John von Neumann, and Hermann Weyl. This volume offers an intimate portrait in words and images of a storied institution that might best be described as a true academic village. The personal reflections collected here - written by leading figures from across the disciplines - bring this exceptional academic institution and its history vibrantly to life. The contributors to this anthology are Sir Michael Atiyah, Chantal David, Freeman Dyson, Jane F. Fulcher, Peter Goddard, Barbara Kowalzig, Wolf Lepenies, Paul Moravec, Joan Wallach Scott, and David H. Weinberg

Miscellanea mathematica by Michael Francis Atiyah ( Book )
9 editions published in 1991 in English and German and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mathematics has a certain mystique, for it is pure and ex- act, yet demands remarkable creativity. This reputation is reinforced by its characteristic abstraction and its own in- dividual language, which often disguise its origins in and connections with the physical world. Publishing mathematics, therefore, requires special effort and talent. Heinz Gotze, who has dedicated his life to scientific pu- blishing, took up this challenge with his typical enthusi- asm. This Festschrift celebrates his invaluable contribu- tions to the mathematical community, many of whose leading members he counts among his personal friends. The articles, written by mathematicians from around the world and coming from diverse fields, portray the important role of mathematics in our culture. Here, the reflections of important mathematicians, often focused on the history of mathematics, are collected, in recognition of Heinz Gotze's life-long support of mathematics
Sir Isaac Newton the gravity of genius ( Visual )
5 editions published between 2004 and 2012 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
By the age of 23, he had laid the foundations for calculus, the laws of gravity, motion and inertia, and begun experiments on light. His major work is called 'The Principia'. Isaac Newton has been called the Father of Modern Science. His incredible body of work represents arguably the greatest contribution to science ever made by an individual. But despite living at the vibrant center of an inspired social scene, his personal life was marked by loneliness. Examine the many discoveries and private fears of this remarkable man

Sir Michael Atiyah is currently the Master of Trinity College Cambridge and Director of the Issac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences. After initial studies in Cambridge he moved to Oxford where he spent the next thirty years, except for a four year stay at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has worked in many fields of mathematics including geometry, topology, differential equations and theoretical physics. He received the Fields Medal in Moscow in 1966. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1962 and served as President from 1990-1995. Vijay Kumar Patodi was a brilliant Indian mathematicians who made, during his short life, fundamental contributions to the analytic proof of the index theorem and to the study of differential geometric invariants of manifolds. This set of collected papers edited by Prof M. Atiyah and Prof Narasimhan includes his path-breaking papers on the McKean-Singer conjecture and the analytic proof of Riemann-Roch-Hirzebruch theorem for Kahler manifolds. It also contains his celebrated joint papers on the index theorem and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer invariant
