En 1881, le prince Georges Stirbey fait don à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de 696 dessins de Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) réunis dans deux albums en maroquin rouge. Croquis extraits de différents carnets ou feuilles isolées de grand format, ces oeuvres traitent de sujets les plus divers dans des techniques très variées, allant de la pierre noire à la gouache sur des papiers colorés parfois très vifs. 0Couvrant toute sa carrière, ils témoignent de la culture et du bagage culturel de l'artiste, sensible dans ses copies à l'art de grands maîtres, notamment Michel-Ange, Watteau, Rubens, Géricault et Delacroix. Ils rendent compte aussi de son insatiable curiosité et de son sens de l'observation, croquant des scènes de la vie quotidienne ou des portraits.
