The army of Frederick the Great by Christopher Duffy( Book )

26 editions published between 1974 and 2009 in English and German and held by 726 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This, the first volume in Historic Armies and Navies written by the editor himself, admirably fulfills the purpose of the series as a whole. Biographies of King Frederick II of Prussia are numerous but this study of the potent military machine that became one of the most powerful forces in the shaping of modern Europe, is something new. Having set the scene of the Prussia of the time, the age and the commander, Christopher Duffy examines in fascinating detail the all-important officer corps, the men, and the various arms of the services, including finance, supply and technical formations. The whole mechanism of the Frederician army is taken apart and the components scrutinized. The contemporary memoirs and journals bring back to life the experiences (some of them frankly appalling) of the rank and file, and present the Prussian officer as a more complicated and, on the whole, more sympathetic creature than the popular stereotype suggests. Students of military history will find here some object lessons in what may be accomplished by an army that is held on its course by fear and constraint rather than "inner" leadership. For the angular, snuff-bedaubed figure of Frederick himself is never far distant. Dr. Duffy resists the temptation to load his crooked back with all the ills of Prussian militarism, and yet Old Fritz remains one of those few people who show themselves less appealing upon closer acquaintance. The book concludes with concludes with chapters on staff work army control, Frederick's army in peace and war, and its influence and legacy. -- from dust jacket

Through German eyes : the British and the Somme 1916 by Christopher Duffy( Book )

10 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clarke; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. But as Christopher Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the Germany view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war ... This book is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle"--Jacket
The '45 by Christopher Duffy( Book )

10 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 1745 Rising has been romanticised over the centuries in many books and films, and still arouses strong emotions in Scotland. However, this is the first truly comprehensive history of the Jacobites' last serious attempt to regain the throne for the Stuart dynasty. It is based on original research in all available archives, including Swedish, French and German records. These make nonsense of the many popular histories based on self-serving accounts written by a few of the key participants. But it is no dry academic analysis. Christopher Duffy writes a vivid narrative that overturns many accepted 'facts' about The '45
