The meaning of psychotherapy in the teacher's life and work by Arthur T Jersild( Book )

10 editions published between 1962 and 2014 in English and held by 312 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is the fourth in a series of studies based on the premise that education for effective use of the mind should be education for self-understanding as well. While teachers interviewed in previous research have agreed that all school experience should contribute to children's insight into themselves, they have felt that the usual teacher training program does not prepare them to guide students in attaining self-understanding. The present study examines the responses of over two hundred teachers who had undergone psychotherapy to questions about their experience in developing insight into self. Changes in their attitudes and in their ways of dealing with problems of anger, competition, anxiety, and acceptance of others and the self are compared with the development of these problems over a period of four years reported by a small group of 'controls' who had not undergone therapy. As volunteers for this study and as people who have undergone psychotherapy, the experimental group are not typical of the teaching profession as a whole. But their problems are typical, and their success in facing and solving these problems is significant. The findings of Dr. Jersild and his colleagues are based on the teachers' own words and responses to questions. The greatest value of this study for the teacher-and of self-understanding for the teacher's life and work-lies not in external changes which are judged by others but in internal re-evaluations, freedoms, relaxations, which may change one's whole attitude toward work, the value of the individual, and the well-being of the self"--Jacket. Training and growth in the development of children; a study of the relative influence of learning and maturation by Arthur T Jersild( Book )

6 editions published between 1932 and 2011 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The primary concern of any practitioner who deals with children is to understand the factors that determine the development of children. These factors can be divided into those which are inherent in the organic make-up of the individual and those which surround but are outside him. The interaction of these two, heredity and environment, constitute the determiners of individual development. Scientific study in all areas is constantly at work endeavoring to understand how this interaction takes place and how much each group of factors (inherited or environmental) determine development. Thus, medicine studies physiological functioning and disease; nutritionists study food composition and metabolism; the psychologist and educator study learning and maturation. The series of studies reported in this monograph were undertaken in an effort to contribute to our understanding of the role of training or practice in relation to maturation in determining the ability of children. The peculiar merits of the studies in this monograph lie in the fact that seven different performances were studied under similar experimental conditions with more than two hundred children, ranging in age from two to eleven years. This similarity of procedure has made possible comparisons of the relative influence of training and maturation on such widely differing performances as color naming, tapping, and singing. They indicate types of activities wherein training and guidance are effective at certain ages and other types of activity where training seems ineffective"--Foreword.
