Over a period of two weeks he shot several thousand feet of film, recording the devastation of the city and the anguish of its people. Early in 1940, his film Siege was released in theatres throughout the United States and in later years the material he brought back was used in many compilations, including Frank Capra's Why we fight series

Kurz bevor Warschau von deutschen Truppen im September 1939 eingeschlossen wurde, erreichte der amerikanische Filmemacher und Fotograf Julien Bryan die Stadt. Zwei Wochen verbrachte er in der belagerten Metropole, wo er vor allem Zivilisten fotografierte. Abzüge des Diafilms Kodachrome - zu dieser Zeit eine technische Neuerung, die farbige Aufnahmen ermöglichte - und zahlreiche nachträglich kolorierte Schwarzweiss-Aufnahmen dokumentieren in erschütternden die Belagerung der polnischen Hauptstadt durch deutsche Soldaten. Eine ausführliche Einführung und Auszüge aus Bryans Texten begleiten die Fotografien. Die Bilder zeigen keinen Krieg zwischen militärischen Streitkräften, sondern die Verwüstungen und Traumata, die diese Besatzung unter den Einwohnern anrichtete. So bilden die Fotografien ein dramatisches Zeugnis deutsch-polnischer Geschichte
