A night off, or, A page from Balzac a comedy in four acts from the German of Schonthan Brothers by Franz von Schönthan( Book )

36 editions published between 1885 and 2003 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The play was co-written by the brothers Franz and Paul Schönthan; it premiered in 1884. The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch, printing date 1885), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 11 handwritten role books for the following parts (the complete character list): Martin Gollwitz, Professor; Friederike, dessen Frau; Paula, deren Tochter; Dr. Neumeister; Marianne, seine Frau; Karl Gross; Emil Gross, genannt Sterneck, dessen Sohn; Emanuel Striese, Theaterdirektor; Rosa, Dienstmädchen bei Gollwitz; Auguste, Dientstmädchen bei Neumeister; and Meissner, Schuldiener. Names of actors and actresses noted on the covers of role books generally reflect up to 3 casts over time. Based on names familiar from the casts of other German-language plays in Philadelphia, it appears that the role books were used for the performance advertised in a theater newspaper of 7 Nov. 1891 (without cast listing, see folder 708); and by another cast that would have performed around 1894 (Mrs. Schefsky, Mrs. Dobers, Mr. Dobers, Miss Hammer). A third set of names could not be placed and might represent a cast later on in the 1890s. (Barely legible notations in the published copy on the page listing characters may indicate yet another cast.) See also a theater newspaper and an oversized playbill related to a performance in Philadelphia in April 1890 (folders 707 and 724, respectively); the names of those cast members do not seem to be in evidence on any of the items
