Iracema : a novel by José Martiniano de Alencar( Book )

347 editions published between 1865 and 2018 in 8 languages and held by 2,607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Martim, " a young warrior whose white skin is not colored by the blood of the Americas," is lost in the forest when he happens upon the beautiful maiden Iracema. She leads him to the Tabajara village and her father, the tribe's shaman. Martim is taken in by the spiritual leader, and Iracema attends to him. Soon, however, her undisguised interest in Martim arouses the jealousy and enmity of "the great chieftain of the Tabajara nation," the hotheaded, treacherous Irapua. One night as the chieftain and his warriors sleep, Iracema leads her love out of the village to a reunion with his spiritual brother, Poti, and the safety of his adopted tribe. Their elopement enrages the Tabajaras and makes Iracema an outcast, but together they undertake an odyssey that will determine the future of a new-born nation." "This tale, which contributed to a Brazilian sense of nationhood, and which many contemporary Brazilian writers and literary critics still cite as a foundation for their own work, reflects the gingerly way that mid-nineteenth century Brazil dealt with race mixture and multicultural experience. With this new translation, readers gain entrance to one of the most beautiful and affecting stories of Brazilian literature, and witness an important chapter in the development of a country's national literature."--Jacket
Senhora : profile of a woman by José Martiniano de Alencar( Book )

137 editions published between 1875 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 631 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is a truth universally acknowledged ..." that a single woman in possession of a good character but no fortune must be in want of a wealthy husband - that is, if she is the heroine of a nineteenth-century novel. Senhora, by contrast, turns the tables on this familiar plot. Its strong-willed, independent heroine Aurelia uses newly inherited wealth to "buy back" and exact revenge on the fiance who had left her for a woman with a more enticing dowry. This exciting Brazilian novel, originally published in 1875 and here translated into English for the first time, raises intriguing questions about traditional gender relationships, the commercial nature of marriage, and the institution of the dowry. While true love and conventional marital roles triumph in the end, the novel still offers realistic insights into the social and economic structure of Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1800s. With its unexpected plot, it also opens new important perspectives on the nineteenth-century Romantic novel. -- Back cover

Ubirajara; lenda tupi by José Martiniano de Alencar( Book )

52 editions published between 1911 and 2012 in Portuguese and Undetermined and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

O guarani by José Martiniano de Alencar( Book )

48 editions published between 1930 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Guarani is set back in 1604, a period when Portugal and its colonies submitted to Spanish dominion due to a lack of heirs to ascend to the throne. Alencar takes advantage of this dynastic complication to resurrect the historical figure of Dom Antônio de Mariz, one of the founders of the city of Rio de Janeiro and a pioneer settler. This historical (factual) background, which orients the novel throughout, is set in the first two chapters; then fantasy, both violent and erotic, starts to prevail. The novel is still widely read nowadays, especially at Brazilian schools as an introduction to novel reading, but also by anyone who enjoys a thrilling adventure story
