Sharing authority effectively by Kenneth P Mortimer( Book )

12 editions published between 1978 and 1982 in English and Undetermined and held by 648 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As financial austerity and enrollment problems compel greater accountability from colleges and universities, administrators, and trustees are reasserting their former authority, students are forming lobbies, government agencies are increasing their controls, courts are influencing campus procedures, and faculties are joining unions. In this analysis of these recent changes, suggestions are made for equitable patterns of decisionmaking for the future. Two major themes are evident: the appropriate distribution of authority, and various claims for legitimate governance. (Editor/MSE)

The psychology of learning by Edwin R Guthrie( Book )

4 editions published between 1942 and 1946 in English and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Forty-First Yearbook follows the plan of presentation of many previous yearbooks of the Society in the respect that it consists of two parts printed as separate volumes. It is unique in the sense that the two parts were from the beginning planned as companion volumes designed as scholarly expositions of the concepts of different schools of thought with respect to two fundamental issues in educational theory and practice. These issues pertain to the ultimate purposes of education in a democratic society and the nature of the learning process. The projected aims of a social enterprise, even though they may be defined in terms of scientific knowledge, are the expression of a choice of alternatives. The final determination of such aims is the motive of philosophy. The effective methods to be employed in realizing selected objectives may most assuredly be disclosed through laboratory and other experimental techniques. Thus, in education, the issues involved in the determination of what knowledge is to be acquired are resolved by reference to the philosophical concepts with which the purposes and results of schooling are to be reconciled, while the methods by which this knowledge may be attained are to be sought in those refinements of experience achieved by the science of psychology in the testing of different theories of human learning"--Preface. The faculty in university governance by T. R McConnell( Book )

4 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The empirical basis of this monograph is intensive case studies of faculty participation in the governance of one large multipurpose state college and two large complex state university campuses. The chapters are concerned with faculty oligarchies (who rules and how), faculty-administrative and faculty-trustee relationships, external constraints on faculty and institutional decisionmaking, decentralization of decisionmaking, and administrative leadership and style. The final chapter supports the principle of representative government, proposes means of strengthening the viability and accountability of academic senates, recommends that faculty members holding divergent views should be included in organs of faculty government, comes down on the side of shared responsibility and authority rather than separate faculty and administrative jurisdictions, and concludes that faculty unionism and collective bargaining may prove to be inimical to governance by joint participation and rational debate. However, the normality of contention and even conflict is assumed, and methods are proposed for institutionalizing conflict. A general political model of decisionmaking is set forth. (Author)
From elite to mass to universal higher education : the British and American transformations by T. R McConnell( Book )

6 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on the assumption that Britain is moving toward mass higher education while the U.S. is on the verge of universal access, the three papers in this volume summarize prospective changes in some of the major characteristics of students in the two countries. Forms of British expansion are discussed. One of these is the new 2-year Dipolma of Higher Education that, according to the government's recent White House paper on education, may be designed as a terminal qualification in its own right, or as a basis for subsequent education for teaching and other professions or for degree courses in polytechnics and universities. The Dipolma, it is pointed out, may serve to diversify educational opportunities and introduce greater flexibility in the pattern of higher education; on the contrary, if it is standardized, it may fasten a new rigidity on the system. The final paper points out deficiencies in the planning and coordination of the University and polytechnic sectors, emphasizes the necessity for designing the whole of higher education, and outlines the need to articulate the parts of a comprehensive and diversified system if the British are to plan "the accommodation of future numbers of students, the future balance of work between the sectors, the future types of course and the future academic communities, entirely free from the suppositions of the past." The redistribution of power in higher education: changing patterns of internal governance by T. R McConnell( Book )

3 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper on university governance draws heavily on documents on this subject produced by the Center for Research and Development at the University of California at Berkeley. Some other works on governance are also discussed. The paper deals with: (1) confusion and flux in governance; (2) changing personal and social values, including shifts in university priorities, civil authorities at the university, and the disaggregation of all but the university's essential functions of teaching and research; (3) internal redistribution of power, including faculty accountability to administration and trustees, reconstitution of governing boards, faculty unionism and academic senates, student role in governance, representative governance challenged, decentralized governance, and characteristics of new administrative styles; and (4) the resolution of conflict. Cemeteries of Henry County, Georgia by Linda Sigler-Sanders( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

All known cemeteries were re-surveyed and plotted with GPS coordinates on maps; and the alphabetical listings include detailed directions to each cemetery. There's an entire section of maps to help locate cemeteries within the county. The largest cemeteries have illustrations to help locate specific sections. Numerous photos of some of the oldest or unique grave markers are shown. Included are all known African-American cemeteries in the county--which to our knowledge have never been published. We certainly acknowledge the earlier extensive cemetery documentation by the late Franklin Garrett and Vessie Thrasher Rainer. A 3 ư page addendum lists markers from individuals born in the 1700s who died in Henry County, Georgia. This large limited edition hardbound book is 933 pages, 8 ư" x11" in size, fully indexed, and more than two (2) inches
Campus governance at Berkeley : a study in jurisdictions by T. R McConnell( Book )

3 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was made of the campus governance experience at the University of California at Berkeley during the turbulent decade of 1966 through 1975. In addition to an overview of Berkeley's institutional mission and its structure of governance, the study considered the matters of: (1) whether dual jurisdiction (one for faculty and one for administrators) or a single jurisdiction (with shared faculty-administrative authority) exists in the university, and the role of the regents; (2) internal and external obstacles to change in the structure of governance; (3) institutional renewal; and (4) the primacy of faculty interests in the decisionmaking process.
