Den tyske propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945) en af Hitler's nærmeste rådgivere, og havde umådelig stor indflydelse på Hitler og Nazityskland i Det 3. Rige, og var en ivrig dagbogsskriver. Da russerne i 1945 rykkede ind i Berlin, blev de tyske offentlige arkiver gennemsøgt hastigt og ganske planløst; noget materiale blev sendt til Rusland, noget ødelagt og resten ladt tilbage i et syndigt roderi. En betydelig mængde af Dr.Goebbels' dagbøger, hvoraf materiale til denne bog er udvalgt og redigeret af L.P.Lochner, blev senere fundet på gårdspladsen ved hans ministerium, omkring 7000 løse ark. Blandt papirerne var også regninger, breve, m.m. Forfatteren er tidligere chef for Associated Press's Berlinskontor, med lang erfaring og kendskab til tysk og europæisk politik. Udvalget gengiver Goebbels som den aldrig hvilende drifkraft bag nazisternes ondsindede antisemitisme. Det var hans mål at udslette alle jøder. Dagbogoptegnelserne viser dette med alt tydelighed, derudover består de af stort og småt. Goebbelt dikterede en del af dagbøgerne, og synes ikke at have undladt hver dag at gøre sine daglige optegnelser, som altid starter med Die Lage - en gengivelse af den daglige militære indberetning, til hvilken kun priviligerede personer havde adgang. Vær iøvrigt opmærksom på, at KGB også har en engelsk oversættelse af et udvalg af Goebbels' dagbogsnotater fra den sidste tid af Nazi-regimet, dvs fra 27. februar 1945 til 9. april 1945, med den autentiske uredigerede tekst, oversat fra den tyske udgave (red. af Peter Stadelmayer)
