Visual information display systems; a survey by Auerbach Corporation( Book )

3 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Visual information display systems connected to computers are fast becoming commonplace. They are found now in stock brokers' offices and schools as well as in jetliner control panels. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its contractors have developed and operated display systems of this type that can span nearly the whole spectrum of applications. This survey of computer-related visual information display systems was undertaken for the NASA Office of Technology Utilization so that others may benefit from NASA's experience. The input-output capabilities of human beings, which determine the requirements for such systems, are likely to be much the same outside of the aerospace field as they are within it. This publication is intended especially for middle management personnel in areas in which the potential benefits from such modern technology have not yet been realized. The report describes hardware and software with wide applications and explains the large-scale checkout and control systems used at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, the Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Manned Spacecraft Center. It also reviews findings in the Ames Research Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and other government and private laboratories. The reader is introduced to interactive display systems, simulation displays, and image enhancement techniques. Most of the examples cited are from aerospace work, but they were chosen because of their potentially broad utility."--Foreword

Information storage and retrieval: a state-of-the-art report by United States( Book )

2 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of the study was to compile relevant background and interpretive material and prepare a state-of-the-art report which would put the developments in the IS and R field into perspective and serve to orient a newcomer into this field. Section II describes IS and R as a problem in person- to-person communications. Section III presents basic IS and R concepts and techniques. It traces the history of traditional librarianship through early IS and R systems and up to the present state-of-the-art. Section IV describes the information products and services which are being employed to aid the process of communication between the originators and users of information. Section V categorizes the information system operations required to produce the products and services, into eight basic system functions from which all IS and R systems can be assembled. These basic functions are: origination, acquisition, surrogation, announcement, index operation, document management, correlation, and end-use. Section VI describes five examples of IS and R applications or systems

Beacon processing equipment design study by Auerbach Corporation( )

2 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A design is described for a beacon processing equipment (BPE) which is intended for inclusion in the air traffic control subsystem of the NAUS. The BPE accepts beacon video and generates a digital position and beacon code report for each target detected. The BPE contains two functional units: a reply detection unit and a target detection unit. The reply detection units senses reply code trains and generates a digital reply message containing range, azimuth and code for each target reply received on each radar sweep. The target detection unit correlates replies received on successive radar sweeps, performs target detection, determines center of azimuth, processes identity and altitude reply codes, and generates target reports. The design is straight forward and capable of being implemented with readily available components. A proposed specification for the BPE is provided in an Appendix

This is the third in a series of eight reports of a research study for the National Agricultural Library (nal) on the effective utilization of bibliographic data bases in machine-readable form. It consists of about 750 references collected to provide background data for the seven technical tasks of the study. The bibliography is set up to correspond with each technical task and includes references on: (1) modes of interaction; (2) software, including available software packages; (3) vocabulary; (4) format problems; (5) standardization; (6) query translation and search strategy; (7) file organization; (8) national information networks; and (9) bibliographic data bases both in general and in regard to the specific data bases of Biological Abstracts, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the Clearinghouse for Federal Scientific and Technical Information, Engineering Index, the Library of Congress, the National Library of Medicine, the Institute for Scientific Information, Pandex Inc., And Chemical Abstracts Service. Research study into the effective utilization of machine-readable bibliographic data bases by H. B Landau( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document is the last of a series of eight reports of a project undertaken to (1) investigate the ways in which the National Agricultural Library (nal) could utilize existing bibliographic data bases, (2) define the problems associated with efficient utulization of these data bases, and (3) develop approaches to solving these problems by intellectual or mechanical means. The report consists of three basic sections: (1) an introduction and brief summary; (2) a more detailed discussion of the seven technical tasks and the findings of each, and (3) a set of recommendations on how the work of this project may be applied to further research and development concerning data base utilization. The recommendations outline eight tasks that must be undertaken prior to the implementation of a full-scale system: (1) coordination of nal machine formats, (2) data conversion, (3) subject vocabulary conversion, (4) data filtering, (5) file creation and maintenance, (6) index building, (7) retrieval and searching, and (8) investigation of communication and time-sharing requirements. An appendix contains a comparative survey of available computer software packages which could be used in an nal data base system. (Jw)
