George Inness and the visionary landscape by Adrienne Baxter Bell( Book )

4 editions published between 2003 and 2006 in English and held by 788 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"George Inness and the Visionary Landscape includes forty color reproductions of Inness's most important paintings and presents both a chronological overview of Inness's life and a more focused treatment of the artist's main philosophical and religious preoccupations. Central to his thinking were the writings of the Swedish scientist-turned-visionary Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), who influenced many of Inness's contemporaries, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Walt Whitman. George Inness also suggests resonances between the artist's visionary landscapes and the concurrent efforts, on the part of the psychologist-philosopher William James (1842-1910), to validate the existence of mystical states of mind. It shows Inness to have anticipated many of the most important tenets of modernism, an achievement that continues to inspire contemporary audiences."--Jacket

The landscapes of Louis Remy Mignot : a southern painter abroad by Katherine Manthorne( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Landscape painter Louis Remy Mignot (1831-1870) was acclaimed during his lifetime as "one of the finest artists of our country." As a Catholic in a Protestant nation, a southerner in the North, and an American abroad, Mignot continually redefined himself in his paintings. His work displays a versatility and delicacy unsurpassed by his contemporaries. Fully illustrated, this first complete appraisal of Mignot's art reestablishes the prominence of a painter who all but disappeared from the annals of art after his death in 1870. Beginning with only fifteen known paintings, the authors retraced Mignot's life and have identified as his more than one hundred paintings and sketches in private collections and museums. The Landscapes of Louis Remy Mignot showcases for the first time the full spectrum of Mignot's diverse body of work. Encompassing snow scenes in Holland, New England farmscapes, views of the English countryside, and pre-Impressionist images of Paris, his chromatically nuanced portrayals of open, empty spaces, ruined buildings, and twilit skies reflect a melancholic sensibility that aligns him with intellectual romanticism

Treasures from Olana : landscapes by Frederic Edwin Church by Frederic Edwin Church( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) traveled the world, captured its beauty in countless paintings, and brought it home to live at Olana, his castle on the Hudson. The name Olana was inspired by a reference Church found to a fortress or a treasury-storhouse in ancient Persia: this extraordinary selection of Church's paintings from his collection at Olana puts the most cherished of his treasures on full display in a volume that includes 77 color plates." "Church's paintings, among the most acclaimed examples of art of the Hudson River School, are found in museums and private collections around the globe. However, Church kept some of his art close by during his lifetime. The rich collection that remains at Olana includes about seven hundred pieces, including notebooks, drawings, and oils, both sketches and completed canvases. They cover the full range of Church's career chronologically and thematically. The highlights from his personal collection are found in the touring exhibition that accompanies this book."--BOOK JACKET
