It notes that degenerates are not always criminals, prostitutes, anarchists, and pronounced lunatics; they are often authors and artists. These, however, manifest the same mental characteristics, and for the most part the same somatic features, as the members of the above-mentioned anthropological family, who satisfy their unhealthy impulses with the knife of the assassin or the bomb of the dynamiter, instead of with pen and pencil. This book investigates the tendencies of the fashions in art and literature; aiming to prove that they have their source in the degeneracy of their authors, and that the enthusiasm of their admirers is for manifestations of more or less pronounced moral insanity, imbecility, and dementia. Thus, this book is an attempt at a really scientific criticism, which does not base its judgment of a book upon the purely accidental, capricious, and variable emotions it awakens--emotions depending on the temperament and mood of the individual reader--but upon the psycho-physiological elements from which it sprang."--Résumé de l'éditeur+-+4218378535670125ocn001926278book18830.76Nordau, Max SimonThe conventional lies of our civilizationHistorySources51121ocn002564531book19100.73Nordau, Max SimonThe interpretation of history16941ocn006010737book18850.73Nordau, Max SimonParadoxeHistory15410ocn000557968book19220.81Nordau, Max SimonMorals and the evolution of man14138ocn002100271book18940.79Nordau, Max SimonDégénérescenceCriticism, interpretation, etc12621ocn002814654book18920.81Nordau, Max SimonEntartung10516ocn004308359book19160.66Nordau, Max SimonFranzösische Staatsmänner10516ocn010690368book19090.84Nordau, Max SimonZionistische Schriften10413ocn004892371book18850.76Nordau, Max SimonParadoxes1037ocn003144576book19070.79Nordau, Max SimonOn art and artistsHistory985ocn000534757book19410.79Nordau, Max SimonMax Nordau to his people : a summons and a challengeAddresses at the Zionist Congresses9621ocn230741916book18810.76Nordau, Max SimonParis unter der dritten Republik : Neue Bilder aus dem wahren MilliardenlandeHistory958ocn000557977book18970.93Nordau, Max SimonThe drones must die898ocn001393751book18950.88Nordau, Max SimonThe comedy of sentiment : a novel8335ocn038169844book18860.79Nordau, Max SimonLes mensonges conventionnels de notre civilisation817ocn014905332book19000.79Nordau, Max SimonMax Nordau's zionistische Schriften8024ocn025376359book18880.84Nordau, Max SimonDie Krankheit des Jahrhunderts [Roman]804ocn001429519book19070.92Nordau, Max SimonA question of honor : a tragedy of the present day, in four actsDrama7110ocn010167889book19090.79Nordau, Max SimonDer Sinn der Geschichte2911ocn044391763book20010.81Stanislawski, MichaelZionism and the fin-de-siècle : cosmopolitanism and nationalism from Nordau to JabotinskyHistoryBiography+-+41487757052154ocn785780190file19970.73Murphy, Melanie AMax Nordau's fin-de-siècle romance of race"Max Nordau (1849-1923) is the author of Degeneration and a founding father of Zionism. This Hungarian-born physician wrote fiction in which romantic and personal relations depicted in miniature the social and ethnic tensions of his day. His family stories metaphorically diagnosed the problems of minorities, especially Jewish populations, in European countries. Close analysis of Nordau's literary work opens new perspectives on his cultural and political efforts and thought."--BOOK JACKET+-+10369957351673ocn000341618book19430.70Nordau, AnnaMax Nordau, a biographyBiography861ocn001341166book19560.88Ben-Horin, MeirMax Nordau, philosopher of human solidarity602ocn166213784book20070.95Kaiser, CélineRhetorik der Entartung : Max Nordau und die Sprache der VerletzungCriticism, interpretation, etc601ocn051698007book20030.79Zudrell, PetraDer Kulturkritiker und Schriftsteller Max Nordau : zwischen Zionismus, Deutschtum und JudentumBiography471ocn038170586book19970.79Schulte, ChristophPsychopathologie des Fin de siècle : der Kulturkritiker, Arzt und Zionist Max NordauBiography412ocn815378711book20120.97Acocella, SilviaEffetto Nordau : figure della degenerazione nella letteratura italiana tra Ottocento e NovecentoCriticism, interpretation, etc351ocn036138560book19960.81Max Nordau (1849-1923) : critique de la dégénérescence, médiateur franco-allemand, père fondateur du sionismeBiography282ocn001815634book19180.81Shaw, BernardThe sanity of art242ocn062900955book20060.79Dahmen, Karola Agnes FranziskaSpurensuche : der Mediziner, Romancier, Kulturkritiker und Journalist Max Nordau in seiner Rolle als Kunstkritiker der Neuen Freien PresseCriticism, interpretation, etcBiography222ocn019169233book19600.63Nordau, Max SimonSheʼelat ha-Yehudim u-fitronah : mivḥar neʼumim u-maʼamarim212ocn032910273book19280.79Nordau, Max SimonErinnerungen : erzählt von ihm selbst und von der Gefährtin seines Lebens212ocn010774478book19510.96Zineman, JacobDer fargesener novi : Maḳs Nordoy's lebns-geshikhṭe : biyografishe shilderungBiography203ocn760276182book20110.96Goldshṭain, YosiAḥad ha-ʻam ṿe-Hertsel : ha-maʼavaḳ ʻal ofiyah ha-poliṭi ṿe-tarbuti shel ha-tsiyonut be-tsel parashat AlṭneulandSources202ocn022295041book19700.76Schallman, LázaroMax Nordau191ocn010713641book19480.81Nordau, AnnaMax Nordau : l'homme, le penseur, le sioniste192ocn055181495book19430.94Nordau, ArinaMax-Nordau, a biography of Anna and Maxa Nordau181ocn011237861book19300.50Shaw, BernardMajor critical essaysCriticism, interpretation, etc172ocn578808340book20090.90Söder, Hans-PeterThat way madness lies : Max Nordau on fin-de-siècle genius+-+0266579546324+-+4218378535+-+4218378535Fri Mar 21 15:32:29 EDT 2014batch51192
