Topology of 4Manifolds (PMS39) by
Michael H Freedman(
)
1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
One of the great achievements of contemporary mathematics is the new understanding of four dimensions. Michael Freedman and Frank Quinn have been the principals in the geometric and topological development of this subject, proving the Poincar and Annulus conjectures respectively. Recognition for this work includes the award of the Fields Medal of the International Congress of Mathematicians to Freedman in 1986. In Topology of 4Manifolds these authors have collaborated to give a complete and accessible account of the current state of knowledge in this field. The basic material has been considerably simplified from the original publications, and should be accessible to most graduate students. The advanced material goes well beyond the literature; nearly onethird of the book is new. This work is indispensable for any topologist whose work includes four dimensions. It is a valuable reference for geometers and physicists who need an awareness of the topological side of the field. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest printondemand technology to again make available previously outofprint books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

Selected Applications of Geometry to LowDimensional Topology by
Michael H Freedman(
)
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book, the inaugural volume in the University Lecture Series, is based on lectures presented at Pennsylvania State University in February 1987. The lectures attempt to give a taste of the accomplishments of manifold topology over the last 30 years. By the late 1950s, algebra and topology had produced a successful and beautiful fusion. Geometric methods and insight, now vitally important in topology, encompass analytic objects such as instantons and minimal surfaces, as well as nondifferentiable constructions. Keeping technical details to a minimum, the authors lead the reader on a fascinat

Problemsolving and selected topics in Euclidean geometry : in the spirit of the Mathematical Olympiads by
Sotirios E Louridas(
)
1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
ProblemSolving and Selected Topics in Euclidean Geometry: In the Spirit of the Mathematical Olympiads contains theorems of particular value for the solution of Olympiadcaliber problems in Euclidean Geometry. Selected geometric problems, which have been given in International Mathematical Olympiads (IMO) or proposed in short lists in IMO, are discussed. Additionally, a number of new problems proposed by leading mathematicians in the subject with their stepbystep solutions are presented. The book teaches mathematical thinking through Geometry and provides inspiration for both students and teachers. From the Foreword: " ... Young people need such texts, grounded in our shared intellectual history and challenging them to excel and create a continuity with the past. Geometry has seemed destined to give way in our modern computerized world to algebra. As with Michael Th. Rassias' previous homonymous book on number theory, it is a pleasure to see the mental discipline of the ancient Greeks so well represented to a youthful audience."Michael H. Freedman (Fields Medal in Mathematics, 1986) Sotirios E. Louridas has studied Mathematics at the University of Patras, Greece. He has been an active member of the Greek Mathematical Society for several years both as a problem poser and a coach of the Greek Mathematical Olympiad team. He has authored in Greek, a number of books in Mathematics. Michael Th. Rassias has received several awards in mathematical problemsolving competitions including two gold medals at the PanHellenic Mathematical Olympiads of 2002 and 2003 (Athens, Greece), a silver medal at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad of 2002 (Targu Mures, Romania) and a silver medal at the 44th International Mathematical Olympiad of 2003 (Tokyo, Japan). He holds a Diploma from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens and a Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. He is currently a PhD student in Mathematics at ETHZürich. At the age of 22, he authored the book ProblemSolving and Selected Topics in Number Theory: In the Spirit of the Mathematical Olympiads Foreword by Preda Mihăilescu (Springer, 2011), ISBN: 9781441904942
