To teach Philippina to read, the Queen wrote a book of stories about flowers and cats and carrots and bees. She drew the pictures also. The widows and orphans began to listen to the Queen's stories and began making their own books. When the new war was declared, the orphans and widows and princess and queen were moved to a safer castle. They brought the books. On the way, they stopped at an empty castle which, except for its ruined walls, was in pretty good shape. It had a garden with trees and caterpillars and violets. It had a pond with geese and frogs. It had lizards and ants and a dog. They decided to stay another day and explore. They found books and a cat, a piano and a cow. They found hens with eggs and a garden.
