From Sabbath to Sunday : a historical investigation of the rise of Sunday observance in early Christianity by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

39 editions published between 1972 and 2003 in 5 languages and held by 602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/sabbath_to_sunday/ How did the change come about from Saturday to Sunday in early Christianity? To find an answer to this question Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi spent five years at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, examining the most ancient documents available. The results of this investigation are presented in From Sabbath to Sunday, which is a translation and an adaptation of his Italian doctoral dissertation, presented at and published by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press. The investigation establishes that the change from Saturday to Sunday began approximately one century after the death of Christ, as a result of an interplay of political, social, pagan and Christian factors. The change in the day of rest and worship was not merely a change of names or of numbers, but rather a change of meaning, authority and experience. Essentially it was a change from a Holy Day into a holiday. From Sabbath to Sunday has the distinction of being the first book written by a non-Catholic ever to be published by a Pontifical press with the Catholic imprimatur (approval). The book has already been reprinted fourteen times in English and has been translated in several languages. Hundreds of scholars of different persuasions have praised this book as a definitive treatment of the early history of the Lord's Day. - Acknowledgments; Preface; CHAPTER I--Introduction; CHAPTER II--Christ and the Lord's Day; CHAPTER III--The Resurrection-Appearances and the Origin of Sunday Observance; CHAPTER IV--Three New Testament Texts and the Origin of Sunday; CHAPTER V--Jerusalem and the Origin of Sunday; CHAPTER VI--Rom and the Origin of Sunday; CHAPTER VII--Anti-Judaism in the Fathers and the Origin of Sunday; CHAPTER VIII--Sun-Worship and the Origin of Sunday; CHAPTER IX--The Theology of Sunday; CHAPTER X--Retrospect and Prospect; ABBREVIATIONS; SECONDARY SOURCES; APPENDIX--PAUL AND THE SABBATH
Women in the church : a biblical study on the role of women in the church by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

10 editions published between 1987 and 2002 in English and Chinese and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the book Women in the Church, Dr. Bacchiocchi provides a much needed balanced interpretation and application of the overrall Biblical teachings on the role of women in the church. The reason for this Biblical distinction derives not from the cultural conventions of the times, but from the distinct and yet complimentary roles for men and women established by God at creation. - Forewords.Preface.Introduction.Ministry of Women in the Old Testament.Ministry of Women in the New Testament. The Order of Creation. The Order of Redemption.Headship and Subordination.Women and Church Office. The Role of the Pastor.Retrospect and Prospect. Is Ordination Needed for Women's Ministry?.Ellen White and the Role of Women in the Church

Hal Lindsey's prophetic jigsaw puzzle : five predictions that failed by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

8 editions published between 1985 and 1997 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/jigsaw_puzzle/ Hal Lindsey's books on end-time prophecies are selling by the millions at a rate usually associated with hamburgers. His jigsaw puzzle approach turns Biblical prophecies into a crystal ball through which he predicts with astonishing boldness the precise pattern of events which were supposed to occur by the end of the 1980s_the time when the present history of this world was supposed to end. In Hal Lindsey's Prophetic Jigsaw Puzzle, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi analyzes five of the predictions which Lindsey made in 1970, showing how they failed to come to pass. The purpose of the book, however, is not merely to show the senselessness of Lindsey's sensational end-time scenario, but primarily to help Christians understand the true nature and purpose of Biblical prophecies. The author encourages the reader to look forward, not to the occurrence of impersonal events, but rather to the coming of our personal Savior Jesus Christ, our "blessed hope." The book is written in a clear and simple style which the common person can understand. It has been favorably reviewed in numerous magazines and featured on radio talk-shows. An excerpt of the book was published in numerous religious periodicals and won the 1987 Associated Church Press Award for the category of "Best Feature Article."
The Sabbath in the New Testament : answers to questions by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

8 editions published between 1985 and 1995 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/sabbath_new_testament/ Many sincere Christians believe that the New Testament teaches that Christ brought to an end the principle and practice of Sabbath keeping, and instituted Sunday keeping instead. To test the validity of this popular view, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi has devoted many years of painstaking research in Vatican libraries in Rome, examining the earliest Christian documents. The results of his investigation are found in his dissertation first published in 1977 by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press, in Rome, Italy. In the book The Sabbath in the New Testament Dr. Bacchiocchi summarizes and updates his extensive research by presenting four basic reasons for his belief in the permanence of the principle and practice of Sabbath keeping in the New Testament. These reasons are presented in a simple and clear way which ordinary people can understand. In the second half of the book Dr. Bacchiocchi answers a wide variety of questions people have often asked him in conjunction with his popular Lord's Day Seminar. The questions deal with historical, theological and practical aspects of Sabbath keeping. This section, entitled "Answers to Questions," makes the book a most valuable reference manual to deal with the most frequently asked questions about the Sabbath. To the delight of many the new and enlarged edition includes also a chapter prepared by Mrs. Bacchiocchi which contains a selection of 20 of her family's favorite Italian Sabbath recipes. - Preface; Part I: VIEWS ON THE SABBATH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT; 1. The advent hope for human hopelessness : a theological study of the meaning of the second advent for today by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

8 editions published between 1986 and 2001 in English and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There is a boom today in Christian literature dealing with Biblical prophecies on the end of the world. Much of this literature treats the prophecies with either skepticism or sensationalism. The result is that many ordinary Christians are either abandoning their hope in the return of Christ, or becoming excessively preoccupied with watching for imminent events which are supposed to bring about Armageddon. In the book The Advent Hope for Human Hopelessness, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi endeavors to meet the dual challenge of skepticism and sensationalism, by presenting a balanced Biblical analysis of many vital topics related to the Second Advent. Some of the significant questions examined are: How did the Advent Hope originate and develop in Biblical history? What is the nature and function of the Advent signs? Which Advent signs are finding an unprecedented fulfillment in our times? Can the 1948 establishment of the State of Israel be legitimately viewed as a major Advent sign of our times? The Advent Hope for Human Hopelessness is an important book for the crucial times in which we live. It will help you to find meaning and courage in the assurance of the Blessed Hope while living among the uncertainties and trouble of this present world. - 1 THE NATURE OF BIBLICAL HOPE; 2 THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 3 THE NEW TESTAMENT AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 4 THE CERTAINTY OF THE ADVENT HOPE; 5 THE DELIMITATION OF THE ADVENT HOPE; 6 THE IMMINENCE AND DISTANCE OF THE ADVENT HOPE; 7 THE NATURE AND FUNCTION OF THE ADVENT SIGNS; 8 THE SIGN OF DIVINE GRACE AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 9 SIGNS OF OPPOSITION TO GOD AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 10 SIGNS OF DIVINE JUDGMENT AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 11 MISTAKEN SIGNS OF THE ADVENT HOPE; 12 THE NEGLECT OF THE ADVENT HOPE; 13 THE JUDGEMENT AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 14 THE INVESTIGATIVE JUDGMENT AND THE ADVENT HOPE; 15 THE CONSUMMATION OF THE ADVENT HOPE; 16 LIVING THE ADVENT HOPE
Immortality or resurrection? : a biblical study on human nature and destiny by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

6 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in English and Korean and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/immortality_resurrection/ What Christians believe about the make-up of their human nature largely determines what they believe about their ultimate destiny. Historically, most Christians have believed that human nature consists of a material, mortal body and a spiritual, immortal soul. This belief, known as dualism, is largely derived from Greek philosophers who regarded the body as temporary and evil but the soul as eternal and good. Dualism has led Christians to envision a destiny where immortal souls survive the death of the body and spend eternity either in the bliss of paradise or in the torment of a fiery hell. During the Middle Ages the belief in the afterlife was promoted through literary and artistic representations of hell as a place of absolute terror where the damned writhe and scream forever, and of paradise as a beatific place where the saints bask in eternal glory. Today, the belief in conscious existence after death is propagated through the polished image of mediums and psychics, the sophisticated "scientific" research into near-death experiences, and the popular New Age channeling with the alleged spirits of the past. These various methods are very successful in making people believe Satan's lie that no matter what they do, they "shall not die" (Gen 3:4) but become like gods by living for ever. The outcome is that according to a recent Gallup Poll 71 per cent of Americans believe in some forms of conscious life after death. In recent years the traditional dualistic view of human nature and destiny has come under massive attack by Biblical scholars, philosophers, and scientists who find such a view contrary to Scripture, reason, and science. In Immortality or Resurrection? Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi builds upon recent research and challenges Christians to recover the Biblical wholistic teaching that the body and soul are an indissoluble unit, created, redeemed, and ultimately restored by God. Immortality or Resurrection? is a most important book for today. With compelling Biblical reasoning, it unmasks the oldest and possibly the greatest deception of all time, namely, that human beings possess immortal souls that live on forever. It will help you understand how this deceptive teaching of innate immortality has fostered a whole spectrum of erroneous beliefs that have affected adversely Christian thought and practice. Most important of all, this book will increase your appreciation for God's glorious plan for your present life and future destiny
The Sabbath under crossfire : a biblical analysis of recent Sabbath/Sunday developments by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

3 editions published between 1998 and 2003 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/sabbath_under_xfire/ Few Biblical doctrines have been under a constant crossfire of controversy during Christian history as has the Sabbath. A bibliographic survey indicates that since the sixteenth-century Reformation, over 2000 books, besides countless articles, have been published on this subject. In recent times, the controversy has been rekindled by at least three significant developments: (1) Numerous doctoral dissertations and articles have been written by Sunday keeping scholars who argue for the abrogation of the Sabbath in the New Testament and for the apostolic origin of Sunday. (2) The abandonment of the Sabbath promoted by former Sabbatarian organizations like the Worldwide Church of God and other independent congregations. These former Sabbatarian Christians who in the past championed the observance of the Sabbath, now reject the day as a Mosaic, Old Covenant ordinance, no longer binding upon "New Covenant" Christians. (3) The newly released Pastoral Letter Dies Domini of Pope John Paul II that calls for a revival of Sunday observance. Dies Domini is a historical document of enormous significance because the Pope grounds the moral obligation of Sunday observance in the Sabbath Commandment itself, by making Sunday the embodiment and "full expression" of the Sabbath. By making Sunday observance a moral imperative rooted in the Decalogue, the Pope calls upon all Christians to "strive to ensure that civil legislation respects their duty to keep Sunday holy." In The Sabbath Under Crossfire, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi examines the recent attacks against the Sabbath within the larger historical context of the origin and development of the anti-Sabbath theology. An understanding of how the abrogation view of the Sabbath began and developed through the centuries, is essential for comprehending why the Sabbath is still under crossfire today. The book analyzes in a systematic way the most common arguments used to negate the continuity and validity of the Sabbath for today. With compelling Biblical reasoning, it unmasks the fallacies of the attempts made to reduce the Sabbath to a Mosaic institution, fulfilled by Christ and condemned by Paul. The final chapter, "Rediscovering the Sabbath," offers an informative update on the rediscovery of the Sabbath by numerous religious groups, scholars, and church leaders. Most important of all, this book will enrich your understanding of how the Sabbath can enable you to experience the Savior's presence, peace, and rest in your life. - Introduction; 1. The marriage covenant : a biblical study on marriage, divorce, and remarriage by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

6 editions published between 1991 and 1994 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/marriage/ There is hardly a Christian family that directly or indirectly has not known the pain of divorce. An important factor contributing to the alarming escalation of divorce among Christians is the growing acceptance of the societal view of marriage as a social contract governed by the laws of the land rather than as a sacred covenant regulated by the higher moral law of God. In The Marriage Covenant Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi challenges Christians to reject the secularization and easy-dissolution of marriage by accepting instead the Biblical view of marriage as a sacred, life-long covenant. This important book is designed to strengthen your Christian home through a recovery of those Biblical principles established by God to ensure happy and lasting marital relationships. Some of the significant questions examined in the book are: What guidance does the Bible offer on how to build up a strong marriage covenant relationship? What is the Biblical role of the husband and the wife? Does the Bible view the function of sex as exclusively procreational or also as relational? Are there Biblical grounds for divorce and remarriage? Is a Christian who remarries guilty of continuous adultery? Should a minister marry divorced people and should remarried people be accepted automatically into church membership? These are some of the questions examined with sound Biblical scholarship and in a style that most people can understand. - 1. The Institiution of Marriage; 2. The time of the crucifixion and the resurrection by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

3 editions published between 1985 and 1988 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/crucifixion/ Some Christian churches teach that Christ was entombed on a Wednesday afternoon and that He resurrected exactly 72 hours later on a Saturday afternoon. These churches view a full three days and three nights entombment of Christ as the messianic sign par excellence given by Jesus. In The Time of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi thoroughly examines the crucial texts used in support of the Wednesday crucifixion dating. The book offers compelling Biblical and historical evidences which clearly refute the Wednesday-crucifixion and Saturday-resurrection dating. The aim of the book is to help Wednesday crucifixionists to recognize the weaknesses of their interpretation of key Biblical passages and to accept the trust worthiness of the traditional chronology of the Friday-crucifixion and Sunday-resurrection. This new edition includes five chapters dealing with the following related topics: the reckoning of the day in Bible times, the reckoning of the Sabbath today, the meaning of Christ's death, the heavenly ministry of Christ, and the sabbatical typologies of Messianic redemption in the Old Testament. Special attention is given to the heavenly phase of Christ's redemptive ministry and its relevance for Christians today

The Christian and rock music : a study on Biblical principles of music by Samuele Bacchiocchi( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/rockbook/DESCRIPTION_ORDER_INF.html The Christian and Rock Music: A Study of Biblical Principles of Music offers a balanced and biblical analysis of the use of Contemporary Christian Music for worship and evangelism. It is written in a popular style by seven scholars of six different nationalities. With one exception, all the contributors are trained musicians with academic degrees, and are passionately involved in enriching the worship experience oftheir congregations. As you know, Contemporary Christian Music, known also as "Christian" rock, is fast replacing traditional music and instruments across denominational churches, including an increasing number of Seventh-day Adventist churches. In many churches today "praisebands" have replaced the choir, overheads have replaced the hymn books, synthesizer shave replaced organs, and drums and guitars have taken their place in the repertoire of church music instrumentation. These changes in church music are causing controversies and divisions in many congregations. Some see the new "pop music" as the music of Babylon, while others asthe prophetic "New Song" to reach and satisfy the baby-boomers' taste for rock music. Often the arguments generate more heat than light, reflecting personal taste or culture rather than a grasp of the biblical principles of music. It has two major objectives. The first is to help people understand the true nature of the various styles of rock music popular today. Special consideration is given to the problems arising from transforming rock music into a medium for Christian worship and evangelism. The second objective is to define those biblical principles that should guide Christians in ma - 1. An Overview of the Music Debate; 2. The Worldview of Rock Music; 3.
