"This is a textbook for a survey course in physics taught without mathematics, that also takes into account the social impact and influences from the arts and society. It combines physics, literature, history, and philosophy from the dawn of human life to the 21st century. It will also be of interest to the general reader."--Page 4 of cover
The extended mind : the emergence of language, the human mind, and culture by Robert K Logan( )

17 editions published between 2007 and 2017 in English and held by 1,480 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The ability to communicate through language is such a fundamental part of human existence that we often take it for granted, rarely considering how sophisticated the process is by which we understand and make ourselves understood. In The Extended Mind, acclaimed author Robert K. Logan examines the origin, emergence, and co-evolution of language, the human mind, and culture." "Building on his previous study, The Sixth Language (2000), and making use of emergence theory, Logan seeks to explain how language emerged to deal with the complexity of hominid existence brought about by tool making, control of fire, social intelligence, coordinated hunting and gathering, and mimetic communication. The resulting emergence of language, he argues, signifies a fundamental change in the functioning of the human mind - a shift from percept-based thought to concept based thought." "In addition Logan shows how, according to this model, culture itself can be treated as an organism that has evolved to be easily attained, revealing the universality of human culture as well as providing an insight as to how altruism might have originated. Bringing timely insights to a fascinating field of inquiry, The Extended Mind will be of interest to readers in a wide range of disciplines."--Jacket

Understanding new media : extending Marshall McLuhan by Robert K Logan( Book )

12 editions published between 2010 and 2016 in English and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marshall McLuhan made many predictions in his seminal 1964 publication, Understanding Media: Extensions of Man. Among them were his predictions that the Internet would become a "global village," making us more interconnected than television; the closing of the gap between consumers and producers; the elimination of space and time as barriers to communication; and the melting of national borders. He is also famously remembered for coining the expression "the medium is the message." These predictions form the genesis of this updated volume by Robert K. Logan, a friend and colleague who worked with McLuhan. In this second edition of Understanding New Media Logan expertly updates McLuhan s Understanding Media to analyze the "new media" McLuhan foreshadowed and yet was never able to analyze or experience. The book is designed to reach a new generation of readers as well as appealing to scholars and students who are familiar with Understanding Media. -- Amazon.com

Collaborate to compete : driving profitability in the knowledge economy by Robert K Logan( Book )

9 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Collaborate to Compete offers a practical, applied approach to fostering a spirit of cooperation not just within in an organization, but also with suppliers, customers, and even competitors to gain a competitive advantage." "Many knowledge management initiatives and approaches have failed in their attempt to harness and share the knowledge resident in organizations because they focus on technology, systems, and the valuation of intellectual property, but often neglect the human side. Collaborate to Compete goes beyond the traditional technological approaches of knowledge management systems to address the human challenges, as well as the psychological, cultural, and organizational barriers to employees, suppliers, and customers actually using these systems."--Jacket
The fifth language : learning a living in the computer age by Robert K Logan( Book )

3 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The alphabet effect : a media ecology understanding of the making of Western civilization by Robert K Logan( Book )

5 editions published in 2004 in English and Spanish and held by 152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is a study of the evolution of writing systems. It describes the role the phonetic alphabet has played in the development of Western Civilization, in contrast with the role of pictographic writing systems in China and elsewhere. Because the alphabet is so much a part of our information environment, we often take its existence for granted and are blind to its effects. Drawing a variety of conclusions about how societies advance, the author shows how the advent of mass communication and the use of computers effect how we communicate."--Jacket
The future of the library : from electric media to digital media by Robert K Logan( Book )

8 editions published between 2010 and 2016 in English and French and held by 138 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally written in the late 1970s, this book was untouched for more than 35 years. McLuhan passed away before it went to press, but Logan always intended to finish it. Even though much has changed in the three decades since work on the project was halted, many of the points that McLuhan and Logan made in the era of 'electric media' are highly cogent in the era of 'digital media.' Looking at the future of the library from the perspective of McLuhan's original vision, Logan has carefully updated the text to address the impact of the Internet and other digital technologies on the library. McLuhan prophetically foreshadowed the transformative effect that computing would have on 'mass library organization' saying it would become obsolescent. It is perhaps no coincidence that a key theme of the book is that libraries must strive to create context given today's hyper information overload. The authors believe this task can be achieved by putting together a compact library of books providing an overview of human culture and scholarship. --From publisher description

The sixth language : learning a living in the Internet age by Robert K Logan( Book )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2004 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Internet, proposes Logan (physics and education, U. of Toronto), constitutes a new link in an evolutionary chain of languages that include speech, writing, mathematics, science, and computing. Expanding on the communications theories of Marshall McLuhan and Harold Innis, he argues that computers and the Internet will increasingly change how people work and learn, and urges readers to become lifelong students. Parts of the study were published in his 1995 The Fifth Language. c. Book News Inc
Taking up McLuhan's cause : perspectives on media and formal causality by Corey Anton( Book )

5 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together a number of prominent scholars to explore a relatively under-studied area of Marshall McLuhan's thought: his idea of formal cause and the role that formal cause plays in the emergence of new technologies and in structuring societal relations. Aiming to open a new way of understanding McLuhan's thought in this area, and to provide methodological grounding for future media ecology research, the book runs the gamut, from contributions that directly support McLuhan's arguments to those that see in them the germs of future developments in emergent dynamics and complexity theory

Investigation of window fracture in bathyscaph by J. C Thompson( )

3 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An investigation was conducted to determine causes for failure of the acrylic window in the access tube of the bathyscaph TRIESTE and recommend corrective measures. The causes were determined to be severe local stressing caused by drilling of bolt holes; mounting stresses; augmenting of these factors by aging and thermal expansion coefficient differentials; and hydrostatic compression stresses during submersion. Design suggestions are made for reducing or eliminating these conditions. (Author)
