Als eines Tages die vertriebenen Kinder durch ein Loch in der Mauer in den Garten zurückgelangen, fängt sich das Leben wieder darin zu regen an, dem Riesen wird es warm ums Herz und er beginnt zu verstehen. Um 1880 schrieb Oscar Wilde dieses Kunstmärchen, das davon erzählt, wie ein verhärtetes Herz sich öffnet und wieder menschlicher wird. 1984 wurde dieses Buch das erste Mal herausgebracht und ist nun aufs Neue erschienen. Lisbeth Zwerger hat die Bilder dazu gemalt, welche die Dynamik des Lebens der Kinder einerseits und dessen Stillstand in der Gestalt des vereinsamten Riesen andererseits, in sehr zarten, ungemein lebendig wirkenden Bildern wiedergibt.
