Evaluating the effectiveness of sex offender registration and notification policies for reducing sexual violence against women final report for National Institute of Justice ( )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The present study examined the effects of comprehensive registration and community notification policies on rates of sexual violence in South Carolina. Specifically, the present study proposed to evaluate whether broad sex offender registration and notification policies have reduced recidivism or deterred new sexual offenses. Additionally, this study proposed to examine whether unintended effects of broad registration and notification policies have occurred. Of note, the present study focused almost exclusively on the effects of registration and notification as pertains to offenses committed by adults. Given that registration and notification policies often targeted juveniles adjudicated delinquent as minors, the investigative team has been involved in separate research pertaining to the effects of these policies as pertains to juveniles ... ." -- P. 2
Palmetto portraits project : a collaboration among the Medical University of South Carolina, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, and South Carolina State Museum ( Book )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), in partnership with the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston have developed a multi-year collaboration called the Palmetto Portraits Project. Noted and emerging photographers from throughout the state of South Carolina have been commissioned to focus on portraying South Carolinians in the Lowcountry, the Piedmont, and the Upstate -- reflecting the full range and diversity of the state's citizens, occupations, and recreational activities. In creating a collection of art to display within MUSC's educational and clinical buildings, the University hopes to remind students, faculty, staff, and visitors of those they serve at MUSC and throughout South Carolina. MUSC and the selected photographers have broadened the impact of the project by donating an identical set of photographs to the permanent collection of the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. The project partners include MUSC, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, and the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. The partners are producing this four-year project that commissions approximately 60 prints annually for a permanent collection at MUSC and the State Museum. MUSC did not provide any guidelines or restrictions as to whom the photographers chose as their subjects. In this, the conclusion of the third year, the photographers from Palmetto Portraits II selected these photographers for this year's project. This year's photographers have now selected their successors for next year. In this way, the photographers themselves help perpetuate the project, thereby broadening the scope of participation and reaching photographers throughout the state. Though the goal of 240 photographs by 24 photographers over four years is ambitious, we feel this unique collaboration will provide an important cross-sectional representation of the people of South Carolina for future generations to enjoy. - Project website

Surgical wound infections ( Visual )
1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
(Critical) This module, one in a hospital infection control series, is an overview of the principal factors that influence postoperative wound infection. The pathogens and physical attributes which predispose the surgical patient to the acquisition of infection are identified and modes of transmission are discussed. Standard surgical wounds are classified. The information is accurate, logical, and clear, but incomplete and of inadequate depth. The technical quality is excellent, but the illustration does not dramatically enhance the instructional quality. This program is recommended for somewhat unsophisticated audiences of medical students, surgical interns, or surgical nurses

Environmental Biosciences Program Fourth Quarter Report ( )
3 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In May 2002, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) signed Assistance Instrument Number DE-FC09-02CH11109 with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) to support the Environmental Biosciences Program (EBP). This funding instrument replaces DOE Assistance Instrument Number DE-FC02-98CH10902. EBP is an integrated, multidisciplinary scientific research program, employing a range of research initiatives to identify, study and resolve environmental health risks. These initiatives are consistent with the MUSC role as a comprehensive state-supported health sciences institution and with the nation's need for new and better approaches to the solution of a complex and expansive array of environment-related health problems. The intrinsic capabilities of a comprehensive health sciences institution enable MUSC to be a national resource for the scientific investigation of environmental health issues. EBPs success as a nationally prominent research program is due, in part, to its ability to task-organize scientific expertise from multiple disciplines in addressing these complex problems Current research projects have focused EBP talent and resources on providing the scientific basis for risk-based standards, risk-based decision making and the accelerated clean-up of widespread environmental hazards. These hazards include trichloroethylene (TCE), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), asbestos and low-dose ionizing radiation. A project is also being conducted in the use of geographical information system technology to analyze population health risks related to environmental hazards as a tool for risk-based decision-making

The impact of these funding uncertainties has been discussed with the DOE. Plans for restructuring the performance schedule of the trichloroethylene projects have been submitted to the department. A project is also being conducted in the use of geographical information system technology to analyze population health risks related to environmental hazards as a tool for risk-based decision-making
